Code of Conduct and Academic Standards in Reflection
Grand Canyon University has set forth a comprehensive and detailed list of academic standards. Academic integrity as well as a general code of conduct are part of these standards. They include information to help you better completely understand what academic integrity is and how it may affect your college career. One example of a violation of the Grand Canyon University Code of Conduct is the sell or distribution of drugs, illegal or prescription. These policies are in place to aid in the prevention of an unsafe learning or educational environment. Just as important as the code of conduct, academic integrity is equally necessary in an educational setting. An example of a violation of academic integrity is cheating. A student may be in violation of this standard if they are found in possession of, or of submitting assignments that they did not complete themselves. A violation of academic integrity or to the code of conduct could result in suspension or worse, expulsion. What is Plagiarism Anyway?
Plagiarism is another example of a violation of the policy that protects academic integrity. Simply, a student has committed the act of plagiarism when they use the words or ideas
of another person and fail to cite the idea or words properly. Everyone deserves recognition when their personal statements, ideas, or hard work and research are used. Even when a student quotes a source and unintentionally forgets or fails to cite their reference, this is still in direct violation of the GCU policy. Finally, even if the student uses a paraphrased version of another person’s idea or thoughts, this is plagiarism. So, why do Students Plagiarize? Students must avoid dishonesty when writing and completing assignments to be successful in their academic careers. Students can avoid violating this policy by always making 2
certain they do their own research and complete their own assignments. A student may plagiarize
another student if they have procrastinated and failed to allow themselves enough time to complete an assignment. Another reason students may plagiarize is simply not having the knowledge or skills necessary to cite a source or understand what it even means to do so. Students should always ask for help in understanding any assignments they do not understand, so
they can ensure they have completed each assignment correctly. Students should allow themselves ample time to complete assignments as well. Having a complete understanding of the assignment and its requirements can help students avoid acts of plagiarism, accident or otherwise. Accountability and Academics
In order to hold myself and my peers accountable regarding the policy on academic standards as well as the Grand Canton University Code of Conduct, I try to ensure that I am knowledgeable about each of them. By educating myself regularly and refresh my memory by reading the handbook. I share any new information with peers, especially when we are in a group
setting completing assignments as a team. I share any new or relevant information with each of my group members or classmates. Finally, before I begin any assignments or projects with other students, I make certain they are aware of the policies and the consequences we could all face if academic integrity is not absolute and anyone fails to follow these rules. 3
