Code of Conduct and Academic Standards in Reflection Grand Canyon University has set forth a comprehensive and detailed list of academic standards. Academic integrity as well as a general code of conduct are part of these standards. They include information to help you better completely understand what academic integrity is and how it may affect your college career. One example of a violation of the Grand Canyon University Code of Conduct is the sell or distribution of drugs, illegal or prescription. These policies are in place to aid in the prevention of an unsafe learning or educational environment. Just as important as the code of conduct, academic integrity is equally necessary in an educational setting. An example of a violation of academic integrity is cheating. A student may be in violation of this standard if they are found in possession of, or of submitting assignments that they did not complete themselves. A violation of academic integrity or to the code of conduct could result in suspension or worse, expulsion. What is Plagiarism Anyway? Plagiarism is another example of a violation of the policy that protects academic integrity. Simply, a student has committed the act of plagiarism when they use the words or ideas of another person and fail to cite the idea or words properly. Everyone deserves recognition when their personal statements, ideas, or hard work and research are used. Even when a student quotes a source and unintentionally forgets or fails to cite their reference, this is still in direct violation of the GCU policy. Finally, even if the student uses a paraphrased version of another person’s idea or thoughts, this is plagiarism. So, why do Students Plagiarize? Students must avoid dishonesty when writing and completing assignments to be successful in their academic careers. Students can avoid violating this policy by always making 2
