Module Six: Short Answer The cultural work that I have chosen to talk about is a literary masterpiece written by the legendary Maya Angelou, titled “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”. Maya Angelou, who was an American poet, author, and civil rights activist, has left an indelible mark on American culture through her inspiring and thought-provoking works. Over the course of her illustrious career spanning five decades, Maya Angelou has been awarded dozens of awards and honorary degrees and has published a wide range of literary works, including autobiographies, essays, poetry, plays, movies, and television shows. Her literary works have not only touched the hearts of millions of people around the world but have also played a pivotal role in shaping the cultural landscape of America. Maya Angelou's book, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", is a powerful autobiographical work that was first published in 1969. It is an account of Angelou's life from the age of three to sixteen, when she was growing up in Arkansas under the care of her maternal grandparents. The novel is a chronicle of Maya's traumatic and unsettling childhood, which was marked by racism, oppression, and sexual abuse. During the time of its publication, the South was undergoing a significant period of racial tensions and strife. Angelou's work explored the evolution of an African American woman growing up in the South during the midst of the Civil Rights Movement. However, her cultural work was controversial and considered bitter towards white people in America at the time, even post-Civil Rights Movement. Despite this, the book gained immense popularity and soon became one of the most influential literary works of the twentieth century. In the 1980s, the cultural work was endorsed in the public-school curriculum, but it only lasted for three years before being banned by the Alabama State Textbook Committee.
