Good morning class and Professor Pinder, I personally found this week’s reading just as good as the previous ones. This week’s reading was about how gender roles vary in different societies and cultures. It also discusses how our culture is moving more towards egalitarian roles which is also called equalitarian roles (Olson, 2019). Some of the places in society that I think where equal gender roles exist are, Norway and Latino/a families. Norway is one of the most gender-equal societies in the world (Olson, 2019). The employment rate for men and women is nearly equal, and men are encouraged to be involved in childcare. When routine household tasks are shared equally, both men and women have equally good relationships. I personally did not find anything in the readings that signaled if they were in certain types of workplaces or certain kinds of families. For the Latino/a families it is mentioned that Latinos are often egalitarian and share equally in decision-making, especially around child-rearing or household decisions (Olson, 2019). You can see this usually when Latinos immigrate to the United States. Some of their views change since women tend to join the workforce and help bring some income. I personally agree with that statement from the readings since me and m wife immigrated to the U.S. she has been part of the workforce for 9 years straight. Even after we had our firstborn she continued to work.
To answer the last question about where I think equal gender roles are least likely to exist, I would have to say that would be the Asian American culture. In the Asian American culture, sex roles have been segregated so that the woman is very connected to the children, and the husband is most highly connected to his work (Olson, 2019). The men and older individuals also tend to have more power due to the hierarchical and patriarchal system. Asian American families are also very successful in raising children as it is one of their biggest goals. They teach them how to be respectful, work hard, and be successful. - References: Olson, D.H., DeFrain, J., Skogrand, L. (2019). Marriages and Families: Intimacy, Diversity, and Strengths.
