Short Answer Drawing from Wade and Ferree Chapter Two and the Lorber reading, give three examples of how the gender binary is a social construction rather than a physiological one. There is no global standard of gender—instead, each culture has their own construction of gender, showing how the gendering of genitals is not universal. Some cultures also have more than two genders, such as the two-spirit gender in some indigenous American cultures. A percentage of our population is intersex, meaning they range in how they express and identify their gender, as well as how their body exhibits primary sex traits. This falls outside of the strict binary as gender being opposites. An increasing amount of people are embracing gender fluidity and/or rejecting gender entirely, expressing themselves however they please unhindered by gender expectations. Some examples include nonbinary, genderfluid, transgender (and nonbinary transgender), and those that fall within the category of cisgender but feel comfortable expressing themselves in things that are characteristics of the supposed ‘opposing’ gender.
