I choose to write about the “Right to Fail” for people who have severe mental illness. Watching this video made me think of my own family. I have a sister who over half her life had lived in homes where there were high-functioning people on site. My sister is a schizophrenic person. After many years of being in these homes and programs, she is now living in a studio apartment by herself. She cooks, cleans, bathes, and dresses herself, she even takes her medication like she is supposed to, and she even goes shopping and to doctor appointments by herself. Many people do have some amazing stories. Raising awareness that people with mental health situations are people too. We are intelligent, funny, shy, bashful and yes we all have flaws no one is perfect. Losing your independence is a major factor when you are mentally stable and then you aren’t. I am schizophrenic also and not many people know it because I feel like I am judged. About seven years ago I had a horrible episode. I ended up being there for four years in housing with help. I had to really work to get myself back together. This video really hit home for me. Not only people with mental health issues are being discriminated against but people with disabilities as well. Years ago we did suffer in silence. There are so many good programs out there to help assist with your issues so you don’t suffer in silence. I have to make sure I am taking care of myself even before I can help anyone else. As long as people are taking care of themselves, taking their medication, eating right, cleaning up after themselves, and bathing they will be okay to be by themselves. Having a personal worker come in and check up on them is a really good thing. You never really know what it's like till it happens to you or a family member. If it would not have been for Butler County SPHS, I would not be where I am now. I am going to be graduating with a bachelor's degree in psychology with drug and alcohol emphasis in March 2024.

I do see these sometimes lost souls out wandering the streets and wondering where is their families or workers. I was lucky that I had someone to speak up for me. I would not be here if I had uncompassionate social workers or someone to advocate for me. Anthropologists should go beyond describing the local context to show how to make mental health care delivery work in a local context. (Kohrt, Mendenhall, & Brown, 2016). Anthropologists need to use ethnography to understand how medication is experienced in patients. It could be phenomenologically, interpersonally, and sociopolitically. Having this crucial information will help alleviate cultural concepts of distress. This may be the most meaningful outcome that a community has with mental health intervention.
