INTRODUCTION TO ANTHROPOLOGY-101 5-2 FINAL PROJECT PART B MILESTONE TWO: INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT OUTLINE SNHU BRIDGET EBELING OCTOBER 1, 2023 JAMIE RANKIN Interview Transcript or Recording Outline
I. Cultural Diversity : In this section, you will explain the importance of understanding and being sensitive to cultural diversity. A. Reporter : Why is cultural sensitivity very straightforward? Why do we need to validate different contributions and cultural expressions? Does it really matter if we have many diverse groups? 1. Your Response : Women tend to outnumber men in care-related occupations such as child care, health care, and social work ( Worthy; Lavigne; & Romero, 2020). When a person is aware of the similarities and differences between people they will allow themselves to understand and learn about different cultural backgrounds. When you validate people you are empowering them to be strong and help to achieve their maximum potential. I believe it does matter if we have many diverse groups this helps with creativity and productivity to be increased and boosted, and faster problem- solving and decision-making are improved. 2. Your Response : When you are looking into socio-cultural factors you think of teenagers as their lifestyles and using the telephone all the time. You may be looking at their spending habits and their values. Teenagers nowadays seem to want to have everything given to them on a silver platter and not want to work for it. Anthropologists use material observation, participant observation, and direct communication to find which methods work to help make people
understand that the world is not to be seen only one way. The world is to be seen through others' eyes and you can learn something from someone else. 3. Your Response : When thinking of elderly people we seem to think that they all need assistance because of their age. There are many people who are elderly and are in great shape and their mind is quick as a whip. Anthropologists work on eliminating inequality, solving social problems, and culturally relevant healthcare services. Anthropologists can better understand and explain the purpose of local institutions, culture, and practices (National Geographic, 2023). 4. Your Response : When we think of lions in the wild, they are called pride. The males and females do many different roles. The females provide the food to the pride. B. Reporter : Human culture might seem more complex than I initially imagined, so how does it relate to the crisis we’ve witnessed here? 1. Your Response : When, anthropologists recognize that they are very important players in the disease outbreak because they have the ability to assess social, economic, and political factors in local contexts (Stellmach, Beshar, Bedford, et al., 2018). Finding out new insight can help with public health emergencies and give the best emergency public health response. Studying human social variation with customs, values, and outlooks. When we look to find out what makes us human we are looking into anthropology.

II. Anthropological Methods : In this section, you will speak as though you are an anthropologist investigating the crisis. You will describe the anthropological methods you would need to use to investigate the crisis, and explain how you believe people would react to you investigating the crisis. A. Reporter : Alright, can you explain to the audience how you came to this conclusion? 1. Your Response : You would have to conduct a participant observation by doing formal and informal interviews, and taking questionnaires or surveys. The person would make sure to get a daily log of activities and detailed notes. Community trust and acceptance are very important to Anthropologists. Interpretation, investigation, and responses are very important. By making use of online technology, these collaborations took place in real-time and This made for forums that were engaged, interactive, and iterative, permitting the real-time ‘mobilization of local research’ and knowledge, including analysis, recommendations, and technical advice (Stellmach, Beshar, Bedford, et al., 2018). Looking into Ethno-archaeology this does help us to understand social, political, technological, and economic aspects of past societies. I feel that the appropriate method for investigating a crisis would be to use qualitative research because it relies on written texts, observations, and interviews on the data that is being collected. Knowing exactly what you are looking at will help a person to understand the phenomena. Qualitative data is less susceptible to bias
as quantitative data is very objective. Both qualitative and quantitative methods do have disadvantages and advantages depending on the methods of research used, the context, and the purpose of the study. Qualitative research does have flexibility, encourages discussion, and explores attitudes and behaviors in depth. Cons of this can just be the sample size and sample selection used, lack of personal privacy, and whether you are using a moderator who is skilled or not. B. Reporter : How did these people let you study them? Why did they let you? You most likely upset them, right? 1. Your Response : Most people do join a study to help assist others in getting the correct information out into the world. Some people are paid to do a study and that gives people to give an incentive to help others. A person could be in a focus group, in-depth interviews, ethnography, online surveys, telephone interviews, face-to-face interviews, social listening, and observation. Negative reactions could be that the people don’t want to answer the questions seriously, not identify the issues to be found, or not bring the results to make sure there are no surprises from the quantitative data. 2. Your Response : Looking through the objective lens does show that it is very important when you are studying a specific group of people. Knowing that culture does have its own set of beliefs, behaviors, attitudes, and norms. The LENS technique allows students to hone the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for intercultural competency
(Rundstrom Williams, nd). The LENS technique provides steps for learning through action, engagement, and discovery with others. III. Cultural Connections : In this section, you will make connections between cultural factors and the likelihood of the crisis occurring in your own culture. If the crisis has already occurred in your own culture, explain how the specific cultural, biological, or environmental factors allowed this to occur. A. Reporter : Do you think this crisis could happen here, to us? 1. Your Response : Looking at the mental health issues that are happening in this country right now shows showing a crisis does exist. Many people who are mentally unstable go into facilities and into private homes to learn to be mentally stable and are learning to live on their own besides having someone look over them like in hospitals. Some people who are suffering from mental health issues do receive a check from the government to help assist in paying for their basic needs, housing, and food since they are not able to work. There are four stages of a crisis and they are pre-crisis, crisis, response, and recovery. You will be able to identify what stage of a crisis you are in at any time in your life. 2. Your Response : There are some mental illnesses that have been linked to pathways and abnormal functioning of nerve cell circuits that affect a particular brain region. Neurotransmitters are how the brain circuits and nerve cells communicate. There could be brain defects, injuries,

substance abuse, depression, infections, exposure to toxins, genetics, and prenatal damage. 3. Your Response : Many types of environmental factors do affect a person's mental health physical factors, pollution, working and weather conditions are physical factors. Abuse, toxic relationships, poor support, lack of stimulation, and messy environments are social factors. IV. Predictions : In this section, you will explain how an anthropological perspective can assist in future crises. A. Reporter : Do you think there is anything that could have informed these people of the crisis? I would hate to think that this could have been recognized and prevented earlier. 1. Your Response : Being able to better understand what is causing a person mental distress and what their well-being and happiness in life may look like. Being able to investigate economic, social, and political contexts can help to assist with health systems and behaviors to make better health interventions and decision-making. Knowing the social dynamics of disease, illness, and health can help in providing an emergency public health response. B. Reporter : Now, I can bet there are people at home that are scared. So, how can you as an anthropologist help in preventing this crisis from happening to us? 1. Your Response : By having a plan of action that is made before the crisis does occur you will know who is in your support system, and
have resources, information, and directions. You want to make sure that the crisis communications given to the public have concern, clarity, competency, confidence, and concern. That way people will know the right crisis response plan to use when a crisis does arise. C. Reporter : Finally, do you still enjoy being an anthropologist throughout this apparent chaos? I mean, how has being an anthropologist helped you out personally? 1. Your Response : Anthropology has helped me gain a better understanding and insight into where we came from, our behavior, study of languages, and this is the window into studying every aspect of human existence. Everyone wants to have questions about ourselves with our past, present, and future selves. Being able to understand the way we look at the world and how everything does affect our being. Knowing how to understand the comparative lens and the study of human society cultures helps us to understand societies and help make our lives become meaningful. Using critical thinking, having cultural awareness, and using advanced research skills will help us to be great employees in the workplace. References
