ATH-101-R1009 Introduction to Anthropology 23EW1 JR 6-1 Discussion: Religion For this assignment, reflect on your reading from Welsch, Vivanco, and Fuentes (2020) in Anthropology: Asking Questions About Human Origins, Diversity, and Culture: Part IV, Chapters 15 (sections 1, 2, 4, and 5) and 17. In your initial post, choose one of these questions to answer: According to Welsch, Vivanco, and Fuentes (2020), what is a totem? Give an example of a totem from your culture and explain how it functions as a totem. When an anthropologist talks about magic, what do they mean? Give an example of this kind of magic in the United States today and explain how it is similar to magic in non- Western societies. According to Welsch, Vivanco, and Fuentes (2020), what are the key features of a ritual? Give an example of a ritual you are familiar with and describe whether or not you think it meets this definition of a ritual. In response to your peers, discuss whether you agree or disagree with their statements. Do you have a different insight than the one they provided? If so, explain what you see as different and why. Use examples to justify your answer. Cite your sources in APA format. To complete this assignment, review the Discussion Rubric . In reference to Welsch, Vivanco, and Fuentes (2020), they do describe a Totem as a system of belief in which humans are said to have kinship or a mystical relationship. This is with a spirit being, such as an animal or plant, sacred object or symbol that does serve a group of people as an emblem (clan, lineage, or tribe) . One example of a ritual is when we blow out candles and make a wish on our birthdays. This I something as a ritual due to this only happening once a year and there is meaning behind it. Everyone does hope that when they blow out the candle a magical moment will happen, and we can produce a magical motif that will make our wishes come true. It is very interesting to see how many rituals can be seen in our traditions and daily activities that have been passed down for generations. Most people in Western culture do not believe in magic the same way non-Western countries do. We do, however, believe in superstitions. These can sometimes be good luck charms. Even though we know they don't truly have magical powers but hoping the charm will help. There are both good and bad magic in which both are more related to religion. A voodoo doll is a doll that someone can inflict pain on a person in which they do not like or wish evil against them. An example of this would be a voodoo doll. People use it to inflict pain on a person they do not like. Magic is used in all cultures in some way. Magic is about changing the state or essence of persons, acts, objects, and events by using certain special and non-trivial
kinds of actions with mediation. Magical instrument types anthropologists identify with are the productive, the destructive, and the protective. Reference Welsch, R. L., Vivanco, L. A., & Fuentes, A.
