Discussion #3 After reading the introduction of "Manhood in America" written by Kimmel, M, I feel comfortable answering the question in comparison to the readings from last week. Specifically, the study conducted by Pyke and Johnson about racialized femininity. Kimmel cohesively explains the complex manner in which it will take to write about the homosocial development of men and masculinity. The base or start of this complexity is the manner in which Kimmel is able to explain that "The women's movement made gender visible - at least to women." The female gender role has been known to all and for ages due to the idea that it is the lesser of genders and we've studied it long enough to know how it was socially constructed and largely influenced by cultural factors. However, when it comes to analyzing masculinity there is not much history about the gender itself. Kimmel has made it evident that in order to write about masculinity there is a large homosocial factor. This is the social bond between those of the same sex, in this instance, men. Men find themselves needing approval from other men, whether it be fathers, coaches, or bosses. This will underline the writing of masculinity because as research continues each piece of evidence will studied for their homosocial elements and how that effected the history of masculinity. Cavemen masculinity explains male behavior or masculinity in terms of biology and evolution. It is bound to a dominant behavior and competitive attitude that stems from prehistoric times. There is also an innate sexual hunger and all of these factors create an aggression that is most typically taken out on women. There is nothing within caveman masculinity that creates a positive effect for femininity, it is truly only negative. It created a force that formed or in better terms restricted femininity to serve caveman masculinity and all their needs.
