Learning journal 2 Belonging: Emergent and Forest school Well-being: Emergent and Forest school Engagement: Emergent and Forest school Expression: Emergent and Forest school What was your first response to both curriculum models? I was curious to have more information about the models and amazed to know about the forest school model that promotes nature-based learning. I was happily surprised that there are unique methods to support children’s development and learning. I had an idea about the emergent curriculum which is child initiated curriculum framed by educators because I learned about that in my previous semester. However, the forest school model was unique and intriguing giving children the opportunity to learn by exploring the natural environment. Based on your investigations what foundation do you think is represented the most by the emergent curriculum model? Or the Forest School's model? I think the foundation which is represented the most by both curriculums is “Engagement”. In the Emergent model, educators observe and document children’s interests and choices and plan activities to actively engage them to learn according to their preferences and desires. In the Forest school model, the natural environment keeps children engaged by providing various opportunities to explore the natural world. Both of these models support other foundations of learning as well but the engagement factor is the highlight of both models. Is there a principle that you think is least represented? Why?

Both of these models recognize the importance of four foundations of learning for creating an environment where children can learn and thrive. These models give priority to the children’s social, emotional and physical well-being, provide children with opportunities to express themselves, promote engagement and create a sense of belonging by fostering strong relationships with the children.
