INDICATORS OF ACCULTURATION SCORING AND REFLECTION Reflection
Introduction
The general sociodemographic of Anthony Anderson is he is a 52-year-old, male, African
American. He has lived in the United States his entire life, but has lived in seven states which include Connecticut, Louisiana, Texas, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, North Carolina, and Florida. He has been a collegiate basketball coach for the last 28 years. Anthony has three adult sons who
all are coaching basketball at the college level. He has been married to his wife for 31 years and she is a schoolteacher at a local elementary school in Florida. I have known the volunteer for three years. I was his previous supervisor at a local university in south Florida. I met with Anthony over a video conference call where we discussed each piece of the acculturation interview. His ethnicity is an African American man who associates directly with the language of English. What is to come in this reflection paper is the discussion of language, cultural behavior, cultural knowledge and in the end how I feel the interview went with Anthony. I will also discuss ways I feel the instrument needs to be adapted and the limitations I perceived during the interview. Language The self-perceived language competence by context or situation for Anthony is English. My interpretation of the total score, range, and mean was what I expected it to be as Anthony has
only lived in the United States but has had experiences traveling to other countries while working with international student athletes. He can speak Spanish but is not fluent and tends to recruit student athletes who have some English-speaking backgrounds. For the language portion of this interview there were no outlier scores that need to be addressed as English is the

The implications for clinical or consulting work with this client would be the client is continuing to do in-depth research to understand my client’s multi-faceted, complex context is an important aspect to focus on when working with my clients, as recognition
of his impact on his present environment (Drankus, 2010). Anthony doesn’t have much time to speak anything other than English with his current job, family situation and lifestyle, so there would be no implications that need to be documented regarding his language. Cultural Behavior Anthony’s lack of availability in participation to certain activities include watching television programs and movies is limited due to his career and family lifestyle. Yes, Anthony has a demanding job focusing on his student-athletes for ten months out of the year, which limits his time to watch television programs and movies. His participation in this portion of the cultural
behavior is solely focused on watching sports center and he does not watch movies. Anthony also could not remember the last time he read a magazine or newspaper as everything has gone to being electronic. The one piece he discussed a lot about during his interview is music. He listens to music daily, whether it be in the car, at practice or while traveling on the road. My interpretation of Anthony’s scores is that he doesn’t value mindless information, meaning he doesn’t just sit and watch television programs or movies like most of the United States. He focuses on his family and job making sure everything comes together so the student-
athletes can be the best versions of themselves while they are out on the real world. The outlier scores were his limited knowledge of what newspapers and magazines were still being distributed or printed. Although, he doesn’t watch movies I was very surprised by the lack of knowledge he had on how to get any newspaper in south Florida. The main music he listens to is rap, Christian music, and soul. This was a very high variety of music he feels connected to which

INDICATORS OF ACCULTURATION SCORING AND REFLECTION is why his score was so high on these particular questions. The reason I believe his scores were different than what would be perceived is because what he values is people and quality time over
fillers. Working with a client like this I would find implications for clinical or consulting work with this client to be understanding the ways in which he experiences acculturation. He is around
people daily who are multicultural, but it doesn’t change his perception of who he is or how he views cultures. When he was asked what magazines, he did speak on magazines that had African American who started them. For example, he talked about Ebony the magazine. When asked about music and who he listens to artists he spoke on were all English-speaking African Americans. Cultural Knowledge The self-perceived cultural knowledge competence by context in this area for Anthony focus on his knowledge of past US-American national heroes, US-American political leaders, US-American television show, and US-American actors and actresses which are all areas he had some knowledge of. He has limited knowledge again on US-American newspapers or magazines.
Some of the heroes and actors/actresses he used when asked questions were Caucasian and European decent. My interpretation of the total score, range, and mean focus on the fact that Anthony still has limited knowledge of those factors that include magazines and newspapers. I also believe it has to do with what was described above, but he doesn’t focus on items in his culture such as politics because his focus is on who he can impact today. The answers to the first eight questions
in this series of questions were quick and he had plenty of knowledge regarding previous

INDICATORS OF ACCULTURATION SCORING AND REFLECTION political leaders which he spoke about Barak Obama, television shows were Family Matters and The Game, actors and actresses were Audrey Hepburn and Liam Neeson. The actor and actress question is one where he did not identify an English African American which was interesting to me. The implications for clinical or consulting work with this client is continuing to consciously avoid constructing the client’s heritage culture as a risk factor (Drankus, 2010).
Conclusions The main reflection I have about this interview with Anthony is his knowledge of many different areas of his culture which include language, limited cultural behavior knowledge and cultural knowledge. Although, I went into this interview with a little bias as I have known the individual as both a co-worker and now friend, I have found it eye opening not only to myself, but it was eye opening to him on the fact that he doesn’t focus on many governmental or political
issues related to his heritage. I must continue to maintain the dignity, value, and uniqueness of the client and his experience of both the dominate and heritage culture (Drankus, 2010).
This instrument is unique in questions and perceptions of what information you can gain from the responses of the volunteer. Although, the questions or very information and matter of fact I found it easier to continue to dig into his responses, making him aware of why he may or may not understand the various limits he has on his own culture. If I were to use this instrument in the future, I would first pick an individual who does not identify being predominately English.
This will help me get a better understanding of how deep their knowledge is within their own heritage. I do believe this was a beneficial tool to use, I would just like to better understand someone who is not from the United States and is predominately English speaking.

INDICATORS OF ACCULTURATION SCORING AND REFLECTION The limitations of this instrument are the limited questions. I believe it is a great starting point to better understand the acculturation of a client, but I like understanding clients on a deeper level. I probed my volunteer quiet a lot when asking these questions, but at the same time he was willing to give me longer responses. I did ask myself during this interview what would happen if I was with a client who didn’t understand what I was asking or the reason behind this instrument. I believe that can limit the outcome and scores. I valued this assignment because I asked myself the questions to see what my acculturation was. Yes, my volunteer is someone I know, but knowing him gave me great insight on what I would have perceived his knowledge to be with his acculturation.
