Noel Karameros Holekamp and Sherman Questions Describe a hypothesis to explain male ground squirrel dispersal on the evolutionary origins level of analysis. How would one go about testing this hypothesis? Hypothesis: Male ground dispersal correlates to evolutionary origins based on natural selection and the need for male squirrels to find mates and defend territories. Testing: This hypothesis can be tested through analysis and observation of the two genders and understanding how they reach to the situations regards mates and finding territories and seeing what traits favor the “juvenile” males to behave this way. Describe a hypothesis to explain male ground squirrel dispersal on the fitness effects level of analysis. How would one go about testing this hypothesis? Hypothesis: Juvenile males disperse to reduce the changes of nuclear family incest Testing: This hypothesis can be tested through researching the various effects if nuclear family incest was to take place and what effects it would have on the offspring of the squirrels. One would need to test what negative reactions could occur to the future offspring and what impact it has on the ecosystem. Describe a hypothesis to explain male ground squirrel dispersal on the ontogenetic level of analysis. How would one go about testing this hypothesis? Hypothesis: Dispersal is triggered by the attainment of a particular body mass. Testing: This can be tested by observed the body mass of different juvenile males and understanding when they would leave their homes and the mass that they would reach during this time period. By collecting data and charting this information, one can determine if the two have any correlation.
Describe a hypothesis to explain male ground squirrel dispersal on the physiological mechanisms level of analysis . How would one go about testing this hypothesis? Hypothesis: Dispersal is caused by effects of hormones that cause males to become more active, curious, and be less fearful than their female counterparts. Testing: This can be tested by testing the hormone levels of a normal juvenile male vs a juvenile male whose hormones have been altered in order to see the affect it might have on them leaving to disperse or if they end up staying at home.
