EEC2401 Professor Robbins 6/1/2020 Chapter 4 I-2.1 —To be familiar with the knowledge base related to working effectively with families and to stay informed through continuing education and training.  Method/strategy: Continued Education As an educator, it is essential to adapt and relate to new families and students each year. Every student and family has unique dynamics and challenges. I would attend teaching seminars, read up on new teaching methods and theories, take educational classes each year, and learn from other educators.  I-2.2 —To develop relationships of mutual trust and create partnerships with the families we serve.  Method/strategy: Seize every moment Having a parent-teacher partnership with trust and mutual respect does not come automatically. To gain that trust, I must seize every moment that I have with the parents. Meetings, conferences, open house events, and field trips are possible moments to learn about the parents, and their families can learn about me. I-2.3 —To welcome all family members and encourage them to participate in the program, including involvement in shared decision making.
Method/strategy: Value Parent Input If my goal is to welcome my students' families, I must exuberate warmth and kindness in our interactions. I must also keep recurring communication with each family. I will make sure that I convey how much I appreciate input and feedback from all of my families. Making parents feel appreciated and valued will encourage family participation and decision making. Parents are more likely to suggest and give feedback if they know their opinion will be taken into consideration. I-2.5 —To respect the dignity and preferences of each family and to make an effort to learn about its structure, culture, language, customs, and beliefs to ensure a culturally consistent environment for all children and families. Method/Strategy: Responsiveness and Embracing All Cultures To learn the preferences and culture of a family, a teacher must apply responsiveness and provide a welcoming environment for the parents and students. A comfortable parent is more willing to confide and share their families’ stories than if they did not trust and respect the teacher. If parents were to reveal to me and share their beliefs and structure for their child, I will appreciate and embrace their ways, and apply what I can to that child’s education. I-2.8 —To help family members enhance their understanding of their children, as staff are enhancing their understanding of each child through communications with families, and support family members in the continuing development of their skills as parents. Method/Strategy: Willingness to Conversate and Exchange Information Parents have a “lens” in which they look at their child through. Teaches have these lenses as well. Teachers spend hours every day with children. Therefore, they have valuable information
on each child that the student’s parents might not even have. As the educator, I would apply this by having a willingness to share my knowledge and educational expertise and listen to the parents and absorb any insight they give to me. Having a frequent conversation with families about the strengths, weaknesses, and progress of each child brings awareness and information to parents and teachers. A teacher that is willing to communicate and exchange information is essential. This method will go a long way when it comes to the development of parents.
