Module Two Question 1 Describe one of the beliefs and values of the Navajo as illustrated in your readings. Most of the Navajo people believed that religion and ceremony should not be included in the school curriculum. In 1894, the Navajo leaders required that their language and culture be part of the school curriculum. Several of the Navajo people agreed that there should be some form of their culture included in the curriculum. A survey that was that consisted of a small but diverse group of Navajo people showed that several of the Navajo people still recall emotional past events while at boarding schools for speaking their native language. They did not want their children to go throw the same experience and wished to spare them from the pain. Module Two Question 2 Describe one way in which the Navajo have incorporated their beliefs and values into the societal structure on the reservation since regaining some autonomy in the 1970's. The Navajo people have tried to incorporate their beliefs and values into numerous pillars of society. Three of these pillars are government, healthcare, and education. Like many of the other tribes that lived on reservations, the Navajo people were designated a federal appointee, who regulated the Navajo, by following the guidelines that the United States government had put into place. Over the years various laws have tried to give back the right to the Navajo people, by granting independence and self-determination as it was before the European settlers arrived in North America. The Navajo stand by their government structure and legal structure, which is different from the United States government but is comparable in certain ways. The Navajo Nation has a president, a court system, and eighty-eight delegates that speak for each of the Navajo sections. The Navajo Nation has made a significant effort to involve various customary Navajo cultures in the legal system. One way that the Navajo have incorporated their beliefs and values into the government pillar is, the "Fundamental Laws of the Diné." This contains traditional customs and laws, which have been set up as a guide for Navajo authorities. The Laws of the Diné stipulate that the values and beliefs of the Navajo be taken into consideration when making decisions. Module Two Question 3 What beliefs and values can be found in your culture? How do these beliefs and values influence your day-to-day life? There are many beliefs and values found within my culture. Some of these are freedom, equality, liberty, individualism, etc. All of these beliefs and values influence every part of my
day-to-day life. I have the freedom every day to choose what I am going to do and what I want to say. I have the freedom to decide who I am and what I want to be. I believe every person no matter who they are, where they come from, what race or gender they are, or what religion they follow everyone should be given equal rights and opportunities. All citizens whether they were born in the United States or moved from another country to the United States should have the right to vote, have a job, and access to education. I fight daily for the equality of my clients whether they have a physical or mental disability. They have the same rights as us and should be treated like everyone else. I believe that my clients are entitled to be tried fairly and without prejudice, I express my views and options daily to stop the stigma of mental health openly since not all of my clients can do so on their own. I believe that every person, including myself, has the freedom to choose what I want to do while taking care of my responsibilities, and that everyone is responsible for their actions. I view everyone I encounter each day as being their person and being unique and special in their way. I believe everyone has the right to privacy. I take clients to doctor appointments, mental health appointments, etc. I always ask my clients if they would like me to go back into the rooms with them as they might not feel comfortable with having others know why they are being seen. If a client chose to have me wait in the lobby. I respect their choice for privacy with their doctor. Privacy is especially important, and everyone is entitled to their privacy. Module Two Question 4 Adopt the social science perspective to create a list of questions about this issue. Write at least two questions each from the point of view of a psychologist, a sociologist, and an anthropologist. 1. A psychologist might ask, "How does stress affect an individual's work-life balance?" 2. A psychologist might ask, "If an individual has an unhealthy work-life how could this affect their mental health?" 3. A sociologist might ask, "How might a person balance the demands from their professional work and their responsibilities to their family?" 4. A sociologist might ask, "How is an individual able to minimize the conflicts between their professional work and the responsibilities to their family while ensuring everyone is satisfied?" 5. An anthropologist might ask, "What are the differences between how we balance work-life now compared to 100 years ago?" 6. An anthropologist might ask, "How can we improve an unhealthy work-life by looking into the past and incorporating it into the present?
