Cruikshank, Julie (2005). Do Glaciers Listen? Local Knowledge, Colonial Encounters and Social Imagination. Vancouver: UBC Press. Identify Main Argument Write the main Argument(s) of reading in 1-2 sentences 3 Marks (1 mark: relevant ideas of the article mentioned; 2 marks: identifying an argument in the reading but not the central argument; 3 marks: clearly and accurately identifies the central argument) 1. Cultures have sentient beings that manipulate people, their actions, and their thoughts, as well as their outlooking perspectives on the world. Documenting Ideas Paraphrase two points of interesting information / facts from the reading; include citation 3 marks each (1 mark for correct citation style; out of 2 marks for paraphrasing of idea/information) 1. Aboriginal elders have mentioned that in aboriginal culture, it is known to avoid disturbing glaciers, as well as to treat them with respect. In some Aboriginal cultures, it is a very common thing to treat human beings, and non-human beings similar. (Cruikshank, 2005, 69). 2. Glaciers have been known to react to cooking grease. Despite being just large chunks of ice, they seem to have historically been known to react to grease being fried nearby, and there have been many rules that have been instilled to prevent the taunting of glaciers. (Cruikshank, 2005, 73).
Analysis of Article Connect two concepts from lecture to reading. For each concept: identify and define the concept, include an example in the form of a quote with citation from the reading related to the concept, and write one to two sentences that relates the concept to the quote. 5 marks each (out of 2 marks for definition of concept; out of 3 marks for example and quality of the description linking the concept to the quote) 1. Cultural relativism is a concept that can be seen in the short story. In the text it is stated that although it is a common ground that glaciers are sentient beings, there are many different stories that come from different places around Canada, and each have their own uniqueness about them. Despite having the common ground, it seems that each area of Canada, has their own perspectives and ways of thinking of similar concepts. Kitty Smith has a story that has been mentioned within the text: “Kitty Smith attributes other characteristics to surging glaciers that are more challenging to understand.” (Cruikshank, 2005, 74). This is in reference to the fact that many attributes of glaciers are different from what is known to other similar cultures. 2. El Tio and glaciers are a good two examples of cultural differences. As glaciers are inanimate objects that are depicted as sentient that should be avoided is possible, El Tio serves its own culture with hope. The concept of El Tio protecting miners is very different than glaciers which are seen as unsafe; “At first it emitted light and then intense heat, driving men, women, and children to abandon their camp and rush to submerge themselves in the Tatshenshini River.” (Cruikshank, 2005, 72). The concept of sentient beings is different for each culture and can have a wide variety of diversity. Reaction / Reflection Respond to the following questions: What did you learn from this reading? What were you left thinking about? What is a similar example / situation to this reading (either from the course or in your life)? Write a short 3-5 sentence paragraph. 5 marks (evaluated based on clear writing, demonstration of knowledge of the reading, and ability to raise questions/make links to the reading) In this weekly reading, I have learned that many cultures tend to have their own versions of sentient beings. I find it an interesting concept and think it can be linked to the idea of wishful thinking or scare tactics. Such as how the glacier stories tend to portray them as something to stay away from, as they are dangerous. I was left thinking about whether there are other ways in which these concepts are being used in a modern environment. For example, since I was young, I have been told that frost is a sentient being that likes to bite young children’s fingers, so you should wear gloves when it’s cold. I now understand that was simply a story to get me to wear my gloves during the winter months, but I wonder if the same concept can be linked to the glacier stories; in a means to protect someone for being hurt.
