Learning Plan (Bachelor of Education – Early childhood) Topic: Dinosaurs Date: 28/08/2023 Age group: 3-5 years Title of experience: Digging for fossils, Dinosaur Eggs, Dinosaur habitat Links to the Early Years Learning Framework: Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners Content/ concepts being explored: Science: Dinosaurs, skeleton, Maths: Sorting, matching English: Dinosaur Vocabulary Rationale: Why did you choose this particular experience? (Community event, child/teacher/family interest, identified as missing from curriculum etc) T he children have shown an interest in playing with the dinosaurs. digging in the sand when they have been out during outside play. The group have a visit from the Melbourne Museum coming up, this will be a great introduction to fossils and all things dinosaurs. Child/Children’s Background Knowledge: What is your starting point – what does the child/children already know, what have they done before, how does this experience connect to or build on their existing knowledge/ interests? The children have spoken about the Tyrannosaurs Rex and using it as the most feared dinosaur and how other dinosaurs eat. Children have knowledge of being able to use shovels to dig and move the sand around looking for treasure and making things in the sand. Learning Objectives: What will the child/children learn? The children will expand their knowledge of dinosaurs by learning dinosaur words, some types of dinosaurs. The children will be able to match dinosaurs from what hatches out of the egg to pictures of the dinosaurs and the type of dinosaur. The children will be able to use imaginative play with others with the dinosaur habitat. Teacher Focus/ Intentionality: What areas will you concentrate on eg; teaching strategies, EYLF practice principles, interests, equity? Each child will have a different knowledge of dinosaurs. The teaching strategy will be scaffolded as they will need to supervise the eggs becoming hatched and having conversations with the children as it is happening. They will be able to look at the different dinosaurs they think it might be and describing what they are seeing to see if they can identify the dinosaur before they hatch. The educator will also support them to expand their vocabulary of dinosaur terms. The other activities of the dinosaur habitat and digging will be more a free-range activity, when the educator has finished the egg hatching, they will be able to have some conversations with the children playing with the activity.
Environment and Resources: What resources and materials will you need to have collected? Where will the experience take place? Considerations for time, space and teacher support? How will the environment be prepared? Outdoor area & sand pit Egg hatching – Table near concreate Bicarb eggs with plastic dinosaurs in Pictures of dinosaurs Vinegar Droppers/medicine syringes Container Fossils – Sand pit Dinosaur fossils Pictures of dinosaurs to match Shovels Little brushes Magnifying glasses Table Habitat – Sand pit Leaves/branches/sticks Sand Dinosaurs Assessment Strategies: How will you identify what the child/children have learnt and how will you record this? The educator will take observations/photos while children are playing these can be up close or from a difference regarding the activities, as well as conversations with the children after finishing the activity as in did they enjoy the activity? The educator will be looking for evidence that the children have been expanding their vocabulary and any connections they have between old and new terminology. Stage Plan for all stages of the experience Approx. Time (full day? Morning? Specific time? Eg 12-1pm) Pre-Service Teacher’s Actions What will you do during this time? What prompting questions might you need to prepare? How might you assess and record learning? How will you cater for individual differences? Child Actions /Tasks What will the children be doing during this time?
Stage 1 Introduction How will you introduce the experience/concept(s) and engage the interest of the child/children? Morning outside play The activities except the egg hatching will be set up in the sandpit, they will have a digging for fossils sign and dinosaur habitat sign to show the specific areas that they are set up. The table will have the egg hatching set up without the eggs they will be brought out with the educator. For egg hatching with 2 students at a time ask them what they know about dinosaurs, look at what dinosaurs might hatch and some features of the dinosaur and the names. Children will come out during their normal outside play. The first 2 children to show interest in the egg hatching will be able to start with the educator and can create a waiting list if needed so they know they will get a turn. Stage 2 Main Body Describe the experience; what will children be doing? How will concepts/ issues be explored? List at least three focus questions relating your learning objectives to be asked of the children. Sit at the table explain how we are going to discover the dinosaur in the egg. Have conversations with the children about what they think is happening by asking questions. Why do you think the egg is dissolving? What dinosaur do you think you have? Why do you think it is that dinosaur? Questions for fossils – What have you discovered? What dinosaur do you think it’s from? What other animals do you think have bones? Questions for habitat – What do we call what you are making? Why have you included this particular object ie trees, volcanoes etc? Children are using syringes and vinegar to dissolve their eggs answering questions and having conversations with the educator and peer. Children are digging for fossils and identifying what dinosaur matches too. Children building habitats of dinosaurs while using imaginative play.

Stage 3: Conclusion How will you conclude the experience? Reflect on learning with children? How will you encourage a smooth transition to the next experience Egg hatching have each child reset for the next child to be able to hatch the egg. Other activities at the end of the session will be packed up and placed in containers to be possible brought out again later in the week. Over lunch have a conversation with a range of students of what they liked or didn’t like about the activities that have been set up today. During mat time read (book from kinder about dinosaurs), before reading book ask the students what they can tell me about dinosaurs. Children will be helping to pack up the area. Listening and talking to educator and peers about the activities they have done. Ask any questions. Listening to others. Evaluation and Self Reflection: Did your experience meet your learning objectives? Why/ why not? What aspects of the experience worked most effectively? What aspects could be improved and how could they be improved? E.g. flow, resources, teaching strategies, environment, assessment of learning etc Follow-up: Are there any areas that you would like to follow up on? Emerging interests/concepts to explore further?
