Lab for Module 1: Anatomical Scavenger Hunt Adapted from Source: Cynthia Harley, Ph.D. Name: Makayla Simmonds, Viviana Feliz, Kyla-shae Williams, Andreina Cepeda Introduction You are allowed and encouraged to use your books, notes, the models, and the Internet for this exercise. The purpose of this exercise is to make you more comfortable with the anatomical terminology that we learned in chapter 1 and that we will be using throughout the next two semesters. Keep in mind that some terms may be more appropriate than others for the same answer. For example, if I asked where your nose was located relative to your ears, “medial” would be appropriate, but if I asked which plane divides your nose from your ears, you’d say “sagittal.” You can use your existing knowledge of the human body or the anatomical models to answer these questions. Of course, you are also allowed to use the book, lecture slides and your class notes. Required Materials Visible Body’s Human Anatomy Atlas app Marieb textbook or lab manual (optional) Free textbook : https://courses.lumenlearning.com/nemcc-ap/ (optional) Articulated skeleton (optional) Whole body anatomy model (optional) Group Activity 1) Illustrate the following pairs of directional terms: Superior/inferior Dorsal/ventral Lateral/medial Distal/proximal Superficial/deep Use the Axilla view from the Regional views. 2) Open up the skull model in VB Suite. Then, illustrate the following anatomical planes using the skull: 1
Frontal (coronal) Sagittal Transverse Anatomical Terminology Questions Answer the following questions and turn in (submit on Moodle) your answers for Module 1 lab assignment. NOTE: for some questions you can insert screenshots from Visible Body’s Human Anatomy Atlas app and with the structure/s labeled. 1. Which plane separates the body into superior and inferior portions? Transverse plane 2. Which plane separates the body into anterior and posterior portions? Frontal plane 3. The mouth is located __ medial _______________ to the ears. 4. The elbow is located __ proximal _______________ to the wrist. 5. The lungs are located ___ deep ____________ to the ribs. 6. The umbilicus (belly button) is located ___ inferiorly ___________ to the sternum. It is located in the Umbilical __________________ abdominal region. 7. The nose is located __ medial ______________ and ____ anterior ____________ to the ears. 8. A scratch wound that does not penetrate the skin is said to be a __ superficial _______________ wound. In contrast, a stab wound that penetrates the skin and muscle is referred to as a _ deep _______________ wound. 9. The ___ cranial _______________ cavity encases the brain. 2
10. The ___ pelvic _______________ cavity contains most of the reproductive and urinary organs. 11. The pleural cavity encases the lungs. 12. Fill in the following table with the names of the appropriate abdominopelvic regions (note that right and left refer to the body, not the sides of the page). Right hypochondriac Epigastric Left hypochondriac Right lumbar Umbilical Left lumbar Inaguinal Pubic Inaguinal 13. The appendix is in the right lower abdominopelvic quadrant. What abdominopelvic region is this? Right iliac 14. The spleen is in the left upper abdominopelvic quadrant. What abdominopelvic region is this? Left hypochondriac. 15. A patient who was in a knife fight suffered a 2-inch stab wound to his back. The knife entered through the posterior thorax along the midsagittal plane and entered the posterior aspect. What structure in the posterior aspect would have been injured by this wound? The structure in the posterior aspect that would have been injured is the bronchi and the heart . 16. The urinary bladder is found within the hypogastric region. 3

17. The cavity contains the heart, and it is surrounded by a membrane called the Parietal pericardium. 18. Name a structure that is located posterior and inferior to the liver . Stomach 19. Name a structure that is on the ventral side of the heart, located more laterally within the axial region. Muscle 20. Name a structure that is located toward the dorsal side of the body, lateral and superior to the hamstring but inferior to the heart. Note: Transverse sections including this structure would include the pancreas. Kidney 21. Name a structure that is in the medial part of the body, located inferior to the lungs and posterior to the intestines. Note: A coronal section would contain this structure and the heart, and it is more caudal than the pancreas . Abdominal aorta 22. Name a structure that is located cranial to the abdominal cavity, caudal to the neck, and dorsal to the sternum. Liver, lungs, and spinal cord 23. Name a structure that is inferior, appendicular, and very distal. Phalanx = Toes 24. If you are taking an axillary temperature, where would you place the thermometer? Under the arm, armpits. 25. If you are testing a patellar reflex, what area are you working on? Knew= Patellar tendon 4
26. Mental refers to what part of the body? Chin 27. If you sleep on your stomach, you are sleeping in a ____ prone _________________ position; whereas if you sleep on your back, you are sleeping in a __ supine ___________________ position. 28. The epigastric region is __ superior ____________ the stomach, where the hypogastric region is _____ inferior __________. 29. From our terminology, you would know that the brachial plexus refers to something that has to do with the ___ arm/brachium _____________. 30. If you are asked to take a buccal swab, which cavity would you swab? Oral cavity, cheek 31. An injury to the ear would be described as __ an lateral anterior damage ________________. 32. In the following figure, label the incision location, given each of the following anatomical descriptions: a. Midsagittal pelvic incision b. Left parasagittal thoracic incision c. Transverse abdominal incision 5
33. Which organs are in the thoracic cavity? The heart, trachea, esophagus, and the thymus. 34. Which organs are in the abdominal cavity? Stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, transverse colon, tail of the pancreas, jejunum, and duodenum. 35. The wrist would be referred to as carpal , while the ankle would be referred to as tarsal . 36.
