To find: The vertex, focus and directrix of the parabola y=14(x2−2x+5) and verify with the help of graphing utility.

Answer to Problem 77E
The vertex, focus and directrix of the parabola y=14(x2−2x+5) are (1,1) , (1,2) , y=0 respectively. The graph of the parabola with vertex, focus and directrix is shown in Figure(1).
Explanation of Solution
Given information:
The equation of the parabola is y=14(x2−2x+5) .
Calculation:
Simplify the equation of parabola.
y=14(x2−2x+5)4y=x2−2x+54y=x2−2x+12−12+54y=(x−1)2+4(x−1)2=4(y−1)
Compare the given equation of parabola with general vertical axis parabola equation (x−h)2=4p(y−k) . This gives the value of h , k , p as 1 , 1 , 1 respectively.
The vertex of the parabola y=14(x2−2x+5) is (h,k)=(1,1) .
The focus of the horizontal axis parabola y=14(x2−2x+5) is:
(h,k+p)=(1,1+1)=(1,2)
The directrix of the parabola y=14(x2−2x+5) is:
y=k−p=1−1=0
Therefore, the vertex, focus and directrix of the parabola y=14(x2−2x+5) are (1,1) , (1,2) , y=0 respectively.
The graph of the parabola y=14(x2−2x+5) with vertex, focus and directrix is shown below.
Figure (1)
Here we can verify the vertex, focus, directrix of the parabola y=14(x2−2x+5) are (1,1) , (1,2) , y=0 respectively.
