Concept explainers
For each of the following muscles, describe the motion(s) produced when the muscle contracts. It may be helpful to use an articulated skeleton.
a. The biceps brachii muscle attaches to the coracoid process of the scapula (one head) and to the radial tuberosity of the radius. Name two movements that the muscle accomplishes in the forearm.
b. The rectus lemons muscle attaches o the anterior inferior iliac spine and the tibial tuberosity. How does contraction move the thigh? The leg!
c. The supraspinatus muscle is located in and attached to the supra-spinatus fossa of the scapula. Its tendon runs over the head of the humerus to the greater tubercle. When it contracts, what movement occurs at the glenohumeral (shoulder) joint?
d. The gastrocnemius muscle attaches to the medical and lateral condyles of the femur and to the calcaneus. What movement at leg results when this muscle contracts? Of the foot?

- The right levator scapula is contracted with the intent to only elevate the scapula, no other actions at the scapula are desired. Please complete the following two part question What are all of the muscles that could act as a synergist/neutralizer during this motion? What muscle would be the best option for a synergist/neutralizer and justify your answer?arrow_forward* These muscles (and subscapularis) form the rotator cuff which is a critical stabilizing element for the glenohumeral joint (shoulder joint). Thus, one action for each of these muscles is to stabilize the shoulder joint. Examine the rotator cuff muscles in the cadaver and see if you can determine where the tendons incompletely surround the head of the humerus. What clinical significance does this have?arrow_forwardWhich of the following statements are true of the locations and functions of muscles? (Read carefully and select all the correct statements.) A. The masseter raises the maxilla. B. The gluteus medius abducts the thigh. C. The triceps brachii flexes the forearm. D. The gastrocnemius dorsiflexes the foot. E. The orbicularis oculi opens the eye. F. The rectus abdominis extends the vertebral column. G. The sternocleidomastoids flex the head and neck. H. The quadriceps femoris group extends the thigh at the hip.arrow_forward
- For each of the muscles below, state the criteria used for naming the muscle. For example, serratus anterior is a saw-toothed anterior muscle. 1. Latissimus dorsi 2. Rectus abdominis 3. Please outline which radioulnar/forearm position would be best to isolate each of the three main elbow flexors AND 2. provide a brief explanation of why hand position makes a difference.arrow_forward
