Concept explainers
Marching madness. The marching band wants to create a half-time show with a fractal theme. For their first drill number on the football field, they want to present their version of the Sierpinski Carpet (see Chapter 1, Story 6). The director has designated the 81-member drum line for this drill. The drummers will form a square block with 9 rows of 9 players each. To indicate the gold portions of the carpet, certain drummers will put gold shower caps on their heads. Create a 9-by-9 grid to represent the drummers. Indicate which drummers should put on shower caps to create the best approximation you can to a Sierpinski Carpet.
