When more than one type of microbesshares a habitat, associations are formed between these microbes. These associations can be symbiotic, in which all the microbes live closely together, sharing nutrients that are required by one or more members. The microbial associations can also be non-symbiotic, in which free-living organisms donot need to be in relationships to survive.
