There are 12 pairs of ribs, where each is attached at its posterior (proximal) end to the vertebral column instead of the last two, in which they arch around the flank of the chest and attach via a cartilaginous strip called the costal cartilage, to the sternum. These ribs differ in size, its orientation, as well as, in their attachment to the vertebral column.
