Chapter 7, Problem 9P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The structural formulas for trans-3-heptene and cis-3-heptene should be written.

Concept Introduction:

Compounds consist of carbon and hydrogen is known as hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons are classified as saturated hydrocarbon and unsaturated hydrocarbon.

Saturated hydrocarbons are those hydrocarbons in which carbon-carbon single bond is present as carbon is linked with four atoms such as alkanes.

Unsaturated hydrocarbons are those hydrocarbons in which one or more carbon-carbon double and carbon-carbon triple bond is present such as alkenes and alkynes.

The compounds having similar chemical formula but different structures are known as isomers.

Cis-Trans isomers are known as geometric isomers. In Cis isomers, functional groups are present on same side of the carbon chain whereas in Tans isomers, functional groups are present on different or opposite side of the chain.

What is the average mass of the 10 pennies? Report your value with correct significant figures. What is the error (uncertainty) associated with each mass measurement due to the equipment? What is the uncertainty associated with the average value? Note that the uncertainty of the balance will propagate throughout the calculation. What is the standard deviation of the 10 mass measurements? Explain the difference between the propagated uncertainty and the standard deviation. Which number would you use to describe the uncertainty in the measurement? Calculate the total mass of the pennies with associated uncertainty. Calculate the average density of a penny based on these data. Propagate the uncertainty values for both mass and volume in your calculations.
