In a nucleophilic substitution reaction, nucleophile takes the position of leaving group by attacking the electron deficient carbon atom.

Compounds A, B, C and D are HCCNa+, CH3(CH2)7CH2CCH, CH3(CH2)7CH2CCNa+ and CH3(CH2)7CH2CCCH2(CH2)11CH3, respectively.

Explanation of Solution

Sodium hydride on reaction with HCCH leads to the formation of HCCNa+. Acetylene lose one of its proton on reaction with strong base like NaH.

HCCH+NaHHCCNa++H2

Therefore, compound A is HCCNa+.

The compound A acts like a nucleophile and attack on the electron deficient carbon atom of CH3(CH2)7CH2Br at which Br is present. It is expressed as,

CH3(CH2)7CH2Br+HCCNa+CH3(CH2)7CH2CCH

Therefore, compound B is CH3(CH2)7CH2CCH.

Compound B on reaction with strong base NaH loss its acidic proton and becomes negatively charged.

CH3(CH2)7CH2CCH+NaHCH3(CH2)7CH2CCNa++H2

Therefore, compound C is CH3(CH2)7CH2CCNa+.

The compound C acts like a nucleophile and attack on the electron deficient carbon atom of CH3(CH2)11CH2Br at which Br is present. It is expressed as,

Therefore, compound D is CH3(CH2)7CH2CCCH2(CH2)11CH3.
