Concept explainers
To explain: The way adopted by the rich man to save himself while stranded on a frozen lake with a bag of gold coins.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Momentum is neither created nor destroyed. It can only transformed one form to another. Momentum of an isolated system is constant quantity.
To save a rich man, a momentum is required to move him towards the shore. So rich man should throw the bag of gold coins away from the shore. The momentum of gold coins bag is conserved by pushing the rich man in opposite direction. Due to this, the rich man would acquire velocity towards the shore. An ice is frictionless, so a rich man would slide towards the shore easily.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the rich person would save his life by throwing the bags of gold coins away from the shore.
