Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation:

The products of the proton transfer reaction shown below is to be drawn.

EBK ORGANIC CHEMISTRY: PRINCIPLES AND M, Chapter 6, Problem 6.48P , additional homework tip 1

Concept introduction:

In a proton transfer reaction, Bronsted-Lowry base reacts with Bronsted-Lowry acid. Here, Bronsted-Lowry acid donates a proton and forms a conjugate base while Bronsted-Lowry base accepts a proton and forms a conjugate acid. The proton transfer reaction consists of a single elementary step.

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation:

A free energy diagram for the following reaction, indicating whether it is endothermic or exothermic, is to be drawn.

Concept introduction:

When comparing two acids, the acid with the lower pKa value is the stronger acid. From the Keq values, the direction of the reaction can be found. Keq>1 favors products. Keq<1 favors reactants. The equilibrium constant between reactants and products is related to standard Gibbs free energy difference.

ΔG0rxn=-RTln(Keq)

A reaction tends to be spontaneous if ΔG0rxn<0. Such a reaction is exothermic because it releases free energy. A reaction tends to be nonspontaneous if ΔG0rxn>0. Such reaction is endothermic because it absorbs free energy.

2. Consider the data below to answer the following questions. Cyanohydrins are important intermediates in the synthesis of α-hydroxycarboxylic acids from ketones and aldehydes. The nitrile functional group can be hydrolyzed by aqueous acid to yield a carboxylic acid. Nitriles can also be hydrolyzed to carboxylic acids using aqueous base. Unfortunately, when a cyanohydrin is treated with aqueous base the original carbonyl compound is isolated. OH CH-COOH 0 HO CN C H30* C. H H HC N NaOH H₂O C=O 0 cyanohydrin H + NaCN + H₂O
