Chapter 6, Problem 11TYK
Summary Introduction

To calculate: If a normal adult takes 100 kcal extra per day, how many hours per week that person would have to walk, run, or swim to burn that calorie.

Introduction:

Cellular respiration provides energy for various activities; the units of energy are kilocalories (Kcal), a measure of the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1kilogram of water by 1°C. Energy requirement of the body is known as basal metabolic rate (BMR).

I played field hockey for 1 hour and my Fitbit Watch says that I expended 1,085 Calories.  If triglycerides in my adipose (fat) cells powered all that activity, how may grams of fat were consumed in powering that exercise?  (Hint:  the Calorie Content of Fats you determined in Lab Exercise 9A was 8.9 Calories/g):  Show your calculation…
Consider a 96 kg adult, who is overweight. Weight loss would improve their general health and wellbeing.   If 35 % of the body mass of this 96 kg adult consists of TGs (in adipose tissue), what is the total available fuel reserve, in kJ and kcal, in the form of TGs? Assume energy value of TGs = 37.4 kJ/g 1 kJ = 0.239 kcal
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of energy your body uses to function at rest in a day. This includes the energy required to keep the heart beating, the lungs breathing, the kidneys functioning, and the body temperature stabilized. Approximately 70 percent of an individual’s energy expenditure goes into basal metabolism. The other 30 percent goes into digestion and absorption of nutrients (10%) and physical movement (about 20%).   Calculate your basal metabolic rate in Calories using the appropriate equation here:   Females: BMR = 655 + (9.6 × wt(kg)) + (1.8 × ht(cm)) – (4.7 × age(yrs)) Males: BMR = 66 + (13.7 × wt(kg)) + (5 × ht(cm)) – (6.8 × age(yrs))       Calculate how many Calories you burn overall in a day.
