Age versus Total Cholesterol The following data represent the age and average total cholesterol for adult males at various ages.
(a) Using a graphing utility, draw a
(b) Based on the scatter diagram drawn in part (a), decide on a model (linear, quadratic, cubic, exponential, logarithmic, or logistic) that you think best describes the relation between age and total cholesterol. Be sure to justify your choice of model.
(c) Using a graphing utility, find the model of best fit.
(d) Using a graphing utility, draw the model of best fit on the scatter diagram drawn in part (a).
(e) Use your model to predict the total cholesterol of a 35-year-old male.

- What does the y -intercept on the graph of a logistic equation correspond to for a population modeled by that equation?arrow_forwardA hydrologist is interested in studying the influence of rainfall on runoff in a drainage basin. Rainfall and runoff are measured during 20 rainfall events. Model the relationship. What are the variables and the type of measurement for these variables? slope (numerical) and itercept (numerical) dependent variable (nominal) and independent vatiable (nominal) Rainfall (total mm) and Runoff (liters/36 hours) geographic location (lat/long), area of watershed (hectares), and substrate type (rock/soil/vegitation) rainfall (numerical) and runoff (numerical)arrow_forwardA popular television show recently released a video preview for the upcoming season on its website. As fans of the show discover the video, the number of views of the preview video has grown each day during the last 2 weeks. The number of days since the release of the video and the natural log of the number of video views is shown in the scatterplot. Based on the scatterplot and residual plot, what type of model would be appropriate for summarizing the relationship between days and number of views? An exponential model is appropriate because the residual plot does not show a clear pattern. A linear model is appropriate because the scatterplot shows a strong, positive linear relationship. A power model is appropriate because the scatterplot of days and natural log of views is strong and linear. An exponential model is appropriate because the relationship between days and the natural log of views is linear, and the residual plot does not show a clear pattern.arrow_forward

- Cost Behavior and Correlation Analysis PC's total maintenance cost for the past 10 months is Php50,000.00. Some of the maintenance activity appears related to the operation of machinery, and the accountant wants to determine whether machine hours should be used as a basis upon which to estimate maintenance cost at various levels of capacity. Machine hours for the same period totalled 40,000 hours. The machine hour differences from average multiplied by the maintenance cost differences from its average and summed E(x¡ – x)(yi – ỹ) is 2,400. The machine hour differences from average squared and summed E(x¡ –x)² is 6,250, and the maintenance cost differences from average squared and summed E(yi – y)² is 1,000. Required: 1. Compute the coefficient of correlation, r, and the coefficient of determination,r2, for maintenance cost and machine hours. 2. Compute the variable maintenance cost per machine hour, using the method of least squares. 3. Compute the fixed maintenance cost, using the…arrow_forwardIndicate that they are qualitative and quantitative data, give 2 specific examples and indicate when it is used in each case.arrow_forwardThis activity demonstrates how to create graphics to enhance the presentation of quantitative data Scenario The sales manager for a small manufacturer is interested in marketing the company's rain coat line in a new area of the country. As a first step to establishing a marketing plan she has asked you to produce some graphs showing the market share of the products sold over the past several years in the region. Analysis After some research, you acquire the approximate sales for each of the competing products presently in the region under consideration (See the data given below). The question now is to show how best to organize the data to take advantage of a graphical analysis. Pie charts give a quick overview of the market share "slices” each competitor presently enjoys. So you decide to use a pie chart to graph the most recent year's sales data for the region. This will give a good indication of just who the market leaders are and how crowded it is at the top. Next, you decide to…arrow_forward
