Chapter 5.1, Problem 13SSC
To determine

To Calculate: The sum of three vectors.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Vector K =4.0

Vector M =5.0(37.0°) above horizontal

Vector L =6.0

Formula Used:

For addition of vectors, add the components of each vector in same direction and then find the resultant.

Horizontal and vertical components of a vector A can be obtained by:

  Ax=AcosθAy=Asinθ

Resultant can be obtained by:

  R=Rx2+Ry2

The angle of the resultant from the horizontal can beobtained by:

  θ=tan1(RyRx)

Calculation:

Components of vector K :

  Kx=4.0Ky=0

Components of vector M :

  Mx=5.0cos37°=3.99My=5.0sin37°=3.00

Components of vector L :

  Lx=6.0Ly=0

Component of resultant in x -direction:

  Rx=Kx+Lx+Mx=4.0+6.0+3.99=5.99

Component of resultant in y -direction:

  Ry=Ky+Ly+My=0+0+3.0=3.0

Magnitude of resultant can be calculated as follows:

  R=Rx2+Ry2=5.992+3.02=6.7

The angle of the resultant from the horizontal can be calculated as follows:

  θ=tan1(RyRx)=tan1(3.05.99)=26.6°

Conclusion:

Thus, the magnitude and direction of the ant’s displacement is 8.32cm and 19.85° respectively.
