Chapter 50, Problem 14TYK
Summary Introduction

To review:

The findings of the evolution of embryonic development when the ventral side of Xenopus embryo shows dorsal structures.

Introduction:

Xenopus is a genus of aquatic frogs. The development of the embryo in amphibians is influenced by the unequal distribution of the yolk. It is observed that a dorsal–ventral axis is developed by the gray crescent, and the gastrulation takes place at the dorsal lip of the blastopore. It is on the dorsal blastopore that a neural plate, precursor for spinal cord, and head is formed.

Using Figure 22.6, indicate the stage at which segmentation genes, homeotic genes, and egg-polarity genes would have an effect on development.
Answer the following: More recently evolved organisms have modified the stages of embryological development. Would you expect early or late stages to be modified the most? Why? The basic stages of embryological development are remarkably similar for a wide range of organisms. How would you explain such consistency? As cells invaginate and move about, do they “know” where they are? If not, how is movement controlled? If so, how do they perceive their position. Is parental care of a species a factor that affects embryological development? If so, how?
You have identified a Drosophila gene that is expressed exclusively in the odd-numbered "stripes" in the cellular blastoderm. Assuming that this gene is not redundant, what would be the most likely phenotype cause by a loss-of-function mutation in this gene? an embryo missing odd numbered segments an adult fly with a second pair of wings instead of halteres an embryo with two anterior ends an embryo missing even-numbered segments an embryo missing larval segments 3-10
