Chapter 5, Problem 20CADQ

A friend comes to you with the following problem. “I provided my boss a cost equation using regression analysis. He was unhappy with the results. He told me to do more work and not return until I had a lower cost estimate for one of the variables—the number of machine-hours. My initial analysis covered the last 36 months (proving 36 observations). By dropping four months in which the relation between costs and machine-hours was very high, I was able to get a lower cost estimate for machine-hours. My boss was happy with my new results. Do you think that what I did was unethical?” How would you respond?

A cost analyst showed the company president a graph that portrayed the firm’s utility cost as semivariable. The president criticized the graph by saying, “This fixed-cost component doesn’t look right to me. If we shut down the plant for six months, we wouldn’t incur half of these costs.” How should the cost analyst respond?
Pix Paper Inc. produces photographic paper for printing digital images. One of the processes for this operation is a coating (solvent spreading) operation, where chemicals are coated onto paper stock. There has been some concern about the cost performance of this operation. As a result, you have begun an investigation. You first discover that all materials and conversion prices have been stable for the last six months. Thus, increasesin prices for inputs are not an explanation for increasing costs. However, you have discovered three possible problems from some of the operating personnel whose quotes follow:Operator 1: “I’ve been keeping an eye on my operating room instruments. I feel as though our energy consumption is becoming less efficient.”Operator 2: “Every time the coating machine goes down, we produce waste on shutdown and subsequent startup. It seems as though during the last half year, we have had more unscheduled machine shutdowns than in the past. Thus, I think our yields…
Curry Rubber manufactures rubber bands for retail companies. The accounting manager has performed a regression analysis of past data. You notice that the formula has an R-squared of 0.68, a t-value of 2.2, and a standard error of the estimate of $218,200. The estimate for next quarter costs is $2,597,623. Calculate Standard Error as a % of predicted total cost which represents a measure of precision of his regression analysis? (Round your answer to one decimal place, i.e., 0.052 = 5.2%.)
