Introduction: DNA undergoes many random changes due to metabolic accidents, radiations, and environmental factors. These could be the reason for the mutation, but most of the changes are eliminated by DNA repair. The DNA repair system uses intact copy of DNA to repair the damaged region to maintain the genomic information. The most dangerous type of DNA damage occurs when both strands of the double helix are broken. This leaves no intact strand to enable accurate repair. If the lesions were left unrepaired, the chromosome would breakdown into smaller fragments. This will cause loss of genes during cell division.
