The term, lathyrism, is given to the diseased condition that is caused by a toxin produced by the peas (Lathyrusodoratus). Lathyrism leads to paralysis in the legs and some other symptoms. The reason for this toxicity is the toxin β- aminopropionitrile. The presence of this toxin makes some pea species nonedible in nature.
