Question
Chapter 49, Problem 1ITD
Summary Introduction
To review:
Cities where the researchers have recorded the lowest and highest sperm counts and the cities where samples reveal the lowest and highest sperm motility (ability to move).
Introduction:
Sperm count is the number of spermatozoa or sperms present per ejaculation. The semen quality is dependent upon the number of sperms present along with the shape and the motility of the sperms. The sperm count is affected by many factors. Presence of fat affects the sperm count. People with low sperm count may get diabetes, heart stroke, and other problems.

Which of the following statements is true?
Women with endometriosis always have symptoms of the disease, even if they are only mild symptoms.
Patients under 25 years of age with endometriosis are often treated with surgical hysterectomy.
In endometriosis, endometrial tissue only grows on reproductive organs and cannot affect other structures in the pelvic or abdominal cavity.
About 1/3 of women with endometriosis struggle with infertility.
Identify whether the following statements describe Asexual or Sexual Reproduction. Answer it all.
1. Requires only one parent and creates offspring genetically identical to parent
2. Needs two parents and creates offspring genetically unique from parents
3. Leads to more genetic diversity
4. Has a little chance of genetic variation
5. Commonly happens to more complex organisms such as plants and animals
6. Commonly occurs to less developed organisms such as bacteria and fungi
7. Does not require finding a mate and formation of gametes
8. Requires finding a mate and formation of gametes
9. Typically happens in faster time period
10. Usually occurs in slower time period
Which of the following statements correctly identifies the differences between spermicidal jelly and a condom?
Select one:
a. Condoms are semipermeable membranes whereas spermicidal jelly does not form any barrier.
b. Condoms contain an antibacterial coating while spermicidal jelly only kills sperm cells.
c. Condoms form a barrier to protect against sperm movement as well as viruses. Spermicidal jelly breaks down cell membranes of bacteria.
d. Condoms prevent the physical transfer of most sexual secretions. Spermicidal jelly kills sperm, but allows fluid transfer.

- Researchers are learning how to transfer sperm-making cells from fertile male mice into infertile male mice in the hopes of learning more about reproductive abnormalities. These donor spermatogonia cells have developed into mature spermatozoa in 70% of cases, and some recipients have gone on to father pups (as baby mice are called). This new advance opens the way for a host of experimental genetic manipulations. It also offers enormous potential for correcting human genetic disease. One potentially useful human application of this procedure is treating infertile males who wish to be fathers. a. - Mumps is a viral infection. The primary symptom of mumps is visible swelling of the parotid gland on either side of the face. However, the virus can also infiltrate the male reproductive system, causing the testes to atrophy. Some effects include oligospermia (low sperm count), azoospermia (no sperm in semen), and asthenospermia (reduced sperm movement). - A hemophiliac male puts on Match.com an ad for a ‘Normal’ Homozygous dominant female to mate with. Is that a waste of money, or does it really give offspring a chance to be normal? I am wondering how to answer this questionarrow_forwardAsexually reproducing animal populations are rare, but they typically consist of females who produce female offspring, so all offspring can produce more offspring. By contrast, half of the offspring of the sexual reproducers are male and cannot produce offspring. Thus, a clonal population of females can expand much more quickly than a population of sexual reproducers. Potamopyrgus antipodarum is a species of freshwater snail that has spread far beyond its native New Zealand. Some populations of these tiny snails reproduce sexually, and other populations reproduce asexually. Huge asexual populations are now disrupting ecosystems all over the world, particularly where the water is contaminated with phosphorus. Fertilizers and detergents contain phosphorus, so agricultural runoff and other forms of water pollution are common in these regions.
