Chapter 4.7, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The effect of impermeability of plant cell wall or the animal extracellular matrix on the cell function.

Introduction:

Extracellular matrix (ECM) is a collection of molecules secreted by cells that provide biochemical and structural support to neighboring cells. The extracellular matrix of animals includes basement membrane and interstitial matrix. The cell wall is a layer that surrounds cells, present outside the cell membrane. The function of the cell wall is to provide protection and support.

Think about the Arctic flounder that lives in cold Arctic waters and the Arabian camel that lives in hot deserts. How might these Arctic flounder and Arabian camel modify the lipid composition of their cellular membranes to withstand their respective environments? Also, how would these modifications relate to the transition temperature of the lipid bilayer? And how could such adaptations affect the function of proteins within the membrane and the overall performance of the cell?
1) Why can cell membranes be polar? What does polar mean? 2) What are the basic cytoskeletal components of a cell? What does an animal cell have that no other cell has in the cytoskeleton?
10(a) Draw or explain the structure of the plasma membrane, 10(b) explain how the plasma membrane is able to be selectively permeable 10(c) How do small, lipid-based molecules move through the membrane? 10(d) How do large or polar molecules move through the membrane?
