Concept explainers
To explain: Why local cortisone injection in an inflamed joint is preferred over the administration of pill.
Concept introduction:
The adrenal cortex acts through the endocrine system under the stressful conditions such as reduced level of blood sugar, volume, and pressure. It stimulates the hypothalamus to secrete the releasing hormone. Then, the releasing hormone stimulates the secretion of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary. From the pituitary, ACTH reaches the adrenal cortex through blood circulation and stimulates corticosteroids secretion. Two types of corticosteroids are found in humans namely glucocorticoids (cortisol) and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids or cortisol activates glucose synthesis from protein and are also involved in the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in muscles and influence the immune system.

- Discuss "the basal lamina of muscle fibers serves as a molecular bulletin board, in which adjoining cells can post messages that direct the differentiation and function of the underlying cells".arrow_forwardPlease help Why does TTX reduce the response caused by nerve stimulation and also the response to direct muscle stimulation?arrow_forwardDescribe the most important regulatory mechanisms controlling the synthesis and secretion of steroids.arrow_forward
- 2) Both the nervous system and the endocrine system communicate with remote parts of the body, but they do so in very different ways. Why is muscular contraction under the control of the nervous system and not the endocrine system? Why is growth regulated by the endocrine system?arrow_forwardWhat is the mechanism possible for sensing muscle damage and triggering repair? Specifically in exercise and building muscle. - give the basics of a disease and its relationship to a faulty signal transduction pathway. Describe some of these diseases in the table below:arrow_forwardConstruct detailed figures and descriptions of three signal transduction pathways (epinephrine, insulin, epidermal growth factor). Explain (figures, narratives) how their structures, functions and cascades are similar and different from each other.arrow_forwardDefine hypertrophy of skeletal muscle. Explain skeletal muscle adaptations to strength training (over time, not acute). What are the mechanisms of action? What hormones are involved? What cell signaling occurs to produce hypertrophy? - a) Through which method of intercellular signaling do motor neurons communicate with muscle fibers? b) Action potentials are an “all or nothing” response, so contraction of muscle fibers downstream of the neuromuscular junction is also an “all or nothing” process. Given that this is the case, briefly describe the two ways that muscles generate varying degrees of forcearrow_forwardFirst, explain how resting membrane potential is established in terms of ion concentration and electric charge. Next, explain the process of neural signal transmission from an alpha motor neuron to the muscle fiber. Do this by explaining how an AP is generated (ions and membrane proteins) at the neuron, how the signal is propagated, what happens at the axon terminal, what happens at the motor endplate, and explain all the molecular events that occur to cause muscle contraction.arrow_forwardexplain what scaffold hopping is and why it is useful for drug development?arrow_forward
