Common response is also known as confounding variables. Common response may be a good explanation for this supposed correlation because it is very unlikely that there is a direct relationship between no drinking and shorter lifespan. For example, those men that did not drink at all may have been smokers, and this could have provided a more plausible explanation for their shortened lifespan.
