Question
Chapter 4.2, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction
To calculate:
The ratio of an elongated cell that measures 125×1×1 arbitrary units. Predict how its surface to volume ratio would compare with reference to the Figure 4.6 “Geometric relationships”, in the textbook.
Introduction:
Surface to volume ratio is also called as surface area to volume ratio and it is denoted by SA:V. The ratio is the “amount of surface area per unit volume of object”.

;, Consider a spherical cell at body temperature (37°C) that is 10 µm in radius. The concentration of ions inside
and outside the cell are given below. Sodium and potassium are the only permeant ions, and the membrane
contains proteins that pump in 3 sodium ions for every 2 potassium ions pumped out.
[Na*] = ?
[K*] = 119mM
[Ci] = 8mM
[A] = 121mM
[Na*] = 120mM
[K*] = ?
[Cr] = 125MM
[glu] = ?
(a) Suppose the cell is in osmotic equilibrium, find the 3 unknown concentrations.
(b) Suppose the membrane conductance to sodium is 5% that to potassium, find the resting membrane potential
via circuit analysis.
(c) What would the resting potential be if the membrane were instead permeable only to chloride ions?
(d) Suppose the cell was suddenly placed in distilled water, what would happen to it? And, how much external
pressure (positive or negative) would be needed to prevent this from happening?
If the scale in question #1 above is, instead, 1000.0 um long, and if a hypothetical organ-
ism's length is equal to the length of the smallest interval on this scale, then how long is the
organism in:
(a) millimeters (mm)?
(b) centimeters (cm)?
(c) meters (m)?
(d) micrometers (um)?

- . The classic demonstration that cell plasma membranes are composed of bilayers depends on the following kinds of data: • The membrane lipids from 4.74 X 1o° erythrocytes will form a mono- layer of area 0.89 m² when spread on a water surface. • The surface of one erythrocyte is approximately 100 um in area. Show that these data can be accounted for only if the erythrocyte membrane is a bilayer.arrow_forwardQ1: The micrograph shows a group of cells from a plant.
