Chapter 4, Problem 4.95UTC
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The missing number of sub-atomic particles occurring in isotopes of germanium is to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

Atomic number: Number of protons present in the atom are known as atomic number of atom.

Atomicnumber=Numberofprotons

Mass number: The number of protons and neutrons present inside the nucleus of atom are known as mass number.

Massnumber=Numberofprotons+Numberofneutrons

Number of protons: The atomic number of an atom denotes the number of protons.

Numberofprotons=Atomicnumber

Number of neutrons: We get number of neutrons from mass number after subtracting number of protons from mass number because mass number is sum of number of protons and neutrons.

Numberofneutrons=Massnumber-Numberofprotons

Number of electrons: In a neutral atom (non-ionic) the number of electrons is equal to the number of protons.

Numberofelectrons=Numberofprotons
