Introduction:

A deaf couple has found that each has relatives through several generations who are deaf. Based on a basic understanding of genetics, they also learnt that most forms of deafness are inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. They planned to have children and they thought that some or all of the children may be deaf. But the first child has normal hearing.
