Kim Epson operates a full-service car wash, which operates from 8 A.M. to 8 P.M., 7 days a week. The car wash has two stations: an automatic washing and drying station and a manual interior cleaning station. The automatic washing and drying station can handle 30 cars per hour. The interior cleaning station can handle 200 cars per day. Based on a recent year-end review of operations, Kim estimates that future demand for the interior cleaning station for the 7 days of the week, expressed in average number of cars per day, would be as follows:
By installing additional equipment (at a cost of $50,000), Kim can increase the capacity of the interior cleaning station to 300 cars per day. Each car wash generates a pretax contribution of $4.00. Should Kim install the additional equipment if she expects a pretax payback period of three years or less?

- Scenario 3 Ben Gibson, the purchasing manager at Coastal Products, was reviewing purchasing expenditures for packaging materials with Jeff Joyner. Ben was particularly disturbed about the amount spent on corrugated boxes purchased from Southeastern Corrugated. Ben said, I dont like the salesman from that company. He comes around here acting like he owns the place. He loves to tell us about his fancy car, house, and vacations. It seems to me he must be making too much money off of us! Jeff responded that he heard Southeastern Corrugated was going to ask for a price increase to cover the rising costs of raw material paper stock. Jeff further stated that Southeastern would probably ask for more than what was justified simply from rising paper stock costs. After the meeting, Ben decided he had heard enough. After all, he prided himself on being a results-oriented manager. There was no way he was going to allow that salesman to keep taking advantage of Coastal Products. Ben called Jeff and told him it was time to rebid the corrugated contract before Southeastern came in with a price increase request. Who did Jeff know that might be interested in the business? Jeff replied he had several companies in mind to include in the bidding process. These companies would surely come in at a lower price, partly because they used lower-grade boxes that would probably work well enough in Coastal Products process. Jeff also explained that these suppliers were not serious contenders for the business. Their purpose was to create competition with the bids. Ben told Jeff to make sure that Southeastern was well aware that these new suppliers were bidding on the contract. He also said to make sure the suppliers knew that price was going to be the determining factor in this quote, because he considered corrugated boxes to be a standard industry item. Is Ben Gibson acting legally? Is he acting ethically? Why or why not?arrow_forwardScenario 3 Ben Gibson, the purchasing manager at Coastal Products, was reviewing purchasing expenditures for packaging materials with Jeff Joyner. Manufacturers of various metal products have relied on the quality and quick turnaround time provided by Cullumber Coatings and its 20 skilled employees. During the past year, as a result of a sharp upturn in the economy, the company’s sales have increased by 30% relative to the previous year. The company has not been able to increase its capacity fast enough, so Cullumber Coatings has had to turn work away because it cannot keep up with customer requests.Top management is considering the purchase of a sophisticated robotic painting booth. The booth would represent a considerable move in the direction of automation versus manual labour. If Cullumber Coatings purchases the booth, it would most likely lay off 15 of its skilled painters. To analyze the decision, the company compiled production information from the most recent year and then prepared a parallel compilation…arrow_forward

There has been a reduction in demand for its products and it is no longer viable to operate both bakehouses. Management needs to decide which of the two it will discontinue to operate in the coming year. A preliminary investigation shows that the Gold Coast bakehouse is able to produce products at a faster rate than the Byron Bay bakehouse. However, this is because of an inefficient heating process. Transport costs are cheaper at the Gold Coast plant, as it is located closer to major suppliers. The following information relates to the two bakehouses for the past year: Gold Coast Byron Bay Average Direct Material cost per kilogram of cookies $3.50 $3.15 Other variable operating costs per kilogram of cookies $1.50 $0.75 Fixed cost of the bakehouse per annum $75 000 $55 000 Net cost of closing the plant $ 100 000 $80 000 Transport costs…arrow_forwardThe Amberssen Specialty Company is a chain of 12 retail stores that sell a variety of imported gift items, gourmet chocolates, cheeses, and wines in the Toronto area. Harry Hilman, the head of Amberssen’s IS group, hasjust received the following memo from Bill Amberssen, Sales Director (and son of Amberssen’s founder): Harry—It’s time Amberssen Specialty launched itself on the Internet. Many of our competitors are already there, selling to customers without the expense of a retail storefront, and we should be there too. I project that we could double or triple our annual revenues by selling our products on the Internet. I’d like to have this ready by Thanksgiving, in time for the prime holiday gift-shopping season. Management estimates that the new bottling machine will provide net annual cash flows of $34,000. Management also believes that the new bottling machine will save the company money because it is expected to be more reliable than other machines, and thus will reduce downtime.
