Concept explainers
An alternate material might be “one-side galvanized,” where the low-carbon steel is dipped in molten zinc and the majority of the liquid is removed from one side by compressed air jets. The material is then subjected to an acid immersion to produce a zinc-free surface on one side and a zinc-coated surface on the other. Which surface would be most weldable? Would you want to put the zinc-coated surface to the inside or outside of your muffler. How might your welding design have to be modified?

- 5 An inexperienced welder has welded a structural beam together and cooled it rapidly under water. This has caused the grain structure to become brittle. The beam will be used in the construction of a building. Which heat treatment method would be best to make the weld suitable for its purpose? (A) Heat the weld to 700 degrees Celsius and allow to cool slowly. (B) Heat to around 600-650 and hold for an hour then allow to cool slowly. (C) Heating to 300 degrees Celsius and let cool. (D) Reheat the weld to below the austenitic range and quench under water.arrow_forwardWhat are valid reasons for adding Yttrium to the zirconia in the Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) in a turbine blade? Select one or more: a. To increase the weight of the TBC b. To match the thermal conductivity of the TBC to the underlying oxide layer To avoid breakage during change in thermal conditions d. To prevent a change of the crystallographic structure as the temperature changes To match the thermal conductivity of the TBC to the metal substrate C. e.arrow_forwardWhat are valid reasons for adding Yttrium to the zirconia in the Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) in a turbine blade?
