Chapter 37, Problem 16P
A student holds a laser that emits light of wavelength λ. The laser beam passes through a pair of slits separated by a distance d, in a glass plate attached to the front of the laser. The beam then falls perpendicularly on a screen, creating an interference pattern on it. The student begins to walk directly toward the screen at speed v. The central maximum on the screen is stationary. Find the speed of the mth-order maxima on the screen, where m can be very large.

Two ships are moving along a line due east (see figure below). The trailing vessel has a speed relative to a land-based observation point of v, = 60.0 km/h, and the leading ship has a speed
of v, = 45.0 km/h relative to the point. The two ships are in a region of the ocean where the current is moving uniformly due west at veurrent = 15.0 km/h. The trailing ship transmits a sonar
signal at a frequency of 1,200.0 Hz through the water. What frequency is monitored by the leading ship? (Use 1,533 m/s as the speed of sound in ocean water. Express your answer to five
significant figures.)

- I ran track in high school. Sometimes spectators would time the races from the stands. Let's say that the spectator is a distance, d, from the starter. The spectator (erroneously) starts their timer when they hear the sound from the starting gun. They should start the timer when they see the smoke from the starting gun.Who can calculate the timing error Δt in terms of d, the speed of sound (vs) and the speed of light (c)? I calculated 6.7 x 10^-7, with speed of sound = 343 m/s and speed of light = c. I just wanted to confirm if I was correct. I used x = x0 + 1/2 (v0 +v)(t).arrow_forwardOn a floor, there are several 1-4 mm elongated drops leading away from a body lying in a pool of blood. You’re curious about how fast this fancy sports car can accelerate. You decide to measure the acceleration by measuring the angle that the string makes with the vertical when the car is accelerating. Your friend’s father puts the pedal to the metal. Using a protractor, you measure that the angle the string makes with the vertical is 40 while the car is accelerating. What is the acceleration of the Ferrari? [Hints: Choose the decoration as the system for your force diagram. Use the vertical-component equation of Newton’s second law to find the magnitude of the force that the string exerts on the decoration. Then continue with the horizontal-component equation.]arrow_forward
- A crate which is able to move casts a shadow on a nearby wall due to a light source at S. The crate has a height H and rolls toward the wall with a constant speed v, starting from the light S at time t = 0. The light S is a fixed distance d from the wall. Determine the speed at which the top of the crate's shadow moves down the wall as a function of time, vs(t). Your answer should be an expression in terms of t, v, d and H. (Since we're interested in the speed only, your answer should be positive.) Hint Hintarrow_forwardNarrow_forwardPleas don't provid handwritten solution ....arrow_forward

The asteroid belt is not that crowded and you don’t have to maneuver through it like that!” Distracted by your statement, he accidentally allows his spacecraft to strike an asteroid, just missing the high score. He turns to you in disgust and says, “Yeah, prove it.” You say, “Okay, I’ve learned recently that the highest concentration of asteroids is in a doughnut-shapedregion between the Kirkwood gaps at radii of 2.06 AU and 3.27 AU from the Sun.
