Chapter 35, Problem 1A
Summary Introduction
Introduction: Plants are mainly multicellular, predominantly photosynthetic eukaryotes of kingdom Plantae. Plant growth is an outcome of cell, new cell enlargement and their differentiation into different tissue types. These growth processes are accompanied by an increase in the dry weight of growing parts and a permanent change in the size.

3) When she was a young child, Mélanie had a favourite swing hanging from the lower branch of
a tree. Over time, Mélanie grew older, and eventually moved out of her parent's house. Now,
when Mélanie returns to visit her parents, the tree is much larger than it was when Mélanie was
just a young child, but her swing is still hangingg at approximately the same height. Using
concepts and terms related to plant growth seen in class, briefly explain how this phenomenon is
possible.

Plant roots develop differently from plant shoots during primary growth. Explain:
How is the formation of lateral roots different from making new branches on shoots?
Why don't roots and shoots generate new primary growth the same way?
two leaves A and B, each having the petiole in a closed test tube full of water. Each is hung on a spring balance. Leaf A has a waxy cuticle on the upper epidermis and stomata on the lower epidermis. Leaf B a waxy cuticle on the upper epidermis and a lower epidermis covered with petroleum jelly. Both leaves were cut from the same plant.
i)Explain why it is important for the leaves to be cut from the same plant.
(ii) List TWO variabes that must be kept constant in this investigation. iii) Table 6 shows the results obtained in the experiment:

Explain why the weight of set up A, decreased.
iv) Using your biological knowledge, indicate how results will change, if a fan is switched on near the experimental set up. Explain your answer.
