Chapter 33, Problem 8TYU
Summary Introduction
To devise:
A hypothesis that explains the difference between the excess of iron uptake in a person suffering with hemochromatosis and a normal person.
Introduction:
In the disease of hemochromatosis the iron intake of the patient increases very much. There is a need of some elements in our body but an excess of any of the element in our body also produces toxicity in our body. So if excess of iron is stored in our body parts then it will lead to the damage of that body part which has excess of iron.

Human chronic gonadotrophin (hCG) hormone produced by the fertilized egg in order to maintain elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone. hCG is also used to induce ovulation during IVF procedures and is known to stimulate the production of testosterone in the testes.
Which of the following hormones has a similar function as hCG?
A. LH
B. Estrogen
C. Inhibin
D. FSH
In terms of the frequency of its effects and its cost to society, the most devastating human teratogen is undoubtedly ethanol. However, not all human babies that are exposed to alcohol while in the womb develop Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Describe three reasons why not all babies exposed to alcohol develop FAS.
A friend of yours wants to better understand the difference between estrous and menses in
mammals. Which answer below would provide a good way of explaining the main difference?
O only menstrual cycles are affected by seasonal changes throughout the year
O copulation normally occurs across the estrous cycle, whereas in menstrual cycles copulation only occurs
during the period surrounding ovulation
O the endometrium shed by the uterus during the estrous cycle is reabsorbed with no extensive fluid flow
out of the body, whereas the shed endometrium of menstrual cycles is excreted from the body
O behavioral changes during estrous cycles are much less apparent than those of menstrual cycles

- Chlamydia is caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. If not treated, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women and epididymitis in men. PID can cause scar tissues in the structure responsible for transporting the fertilized egg and in the tissue that is maintained by progesterone during a menstrual cycle, leading to infertility. In the diagram above, the structures associated with PID for the effects described above are numbered Select one: a. 1, which is the Fallopian tube, and 3, which is the endometrium, respectively b. 1, which is the Fallopian tube, and 4, which is the endometrium, respectively c. 4, which is the uterus, and 6, which is the cervix, respectively d. 3, which is the uterus, and 7, which is the cervix, respectivelyarrow_forwardPredict some consequences of trying to use a skin patch to administerinsulin, a protein hormone, to a person who has diabetes mellitusarrow_forwardIn human populations of northern European origin, the disorder called hemochromatosis causes excess iron uptake from food and affects one in 200 adults. There are 4 phases: Day 1-5 Menstruation (period) Day 6-14 proliferation Day 11-13 Ovulation Day 15-28 Secretory phase Task: Create and annotate a model to show what is happening in the female body during the 4 phases of the menstrual cycle. This can be done digitally or on paper. If you chose to do this on paper, just make sure it gets to Ms. B. Things to include: Arrange the phases into a cycle Include changes in hormone levels in each phase (PSH, LH, Estrogen, Progesterone) Changes in the uterine lining What is happening to the egg (follicular, ovulation, luteal phase) It might help to start with arranging the phases into a cycle and then fill in details about what is happening at each phase. - Give written answer with explanation and conclusionarrow_forwardWhich of the following is an example of how sperm are equipped to survive outside of the male body? O The acrosomal enzyme in the head of the sperm protect the sperm from the female immune lysosomes. O Semen is alkaline which neutralizes the acidity of the vagina The bulbourethral gland produces fructose to nourish sperm O They do not have mitochondria, so they are not dependent upon aerobic respiration.arrow_forwardMate guarding is an evolved response to sperm competition. Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) females regularly mate with several males in the same estrous cycle, whereas gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) females almost never do, since they typically live in bands, each controlled by a single, powerful male. How large (as a proportion of body size) should the testes of chimpanzee males be relative to gorilla testes (Harcourt et al. 1981)? If the testes of men are more similar to those of chimpanzees, what would this tell us about the intensity of sperm competition during our evolutionary past? If, on the other hand, human testes resemble those of gorillas, what conclusion is justified? Please don't write from any online source.arrow_forward
- Mammalian sperm don’t live very long after ejaculation. Therefore, for a rhino cow to become pregnant, the sperm must be placed in her vagina or uterus, whether by mating or by artificial insemination, at about the same time that ovulation occurs. The simplest way to ensure correct timing is to induce ovulation and have mating or artificial insemination the same day. How might ovulation be induced, in rhinos or in other mammals?arrow_forwardInfertility is defined as the inability to get pregnant despite having frequent, unprotected sex for at least a year. In trying to discover the cause of a female patient’s infertility, her doctor ordered an analysis of circulating hormone levels every day during her 28-day reproductive cycle. Her progesterone levels started very close to zero ng/mL on the first day and remained there throughout her entire 28-day cycle. Based on these results, and your understanding of progesterone, explain why this female is unlikely to achieve a successful pregnancyarrow_forwardDescribe the role of hormones in human reproductionarrow_forward
