Chapter 32, Problem 32.16QAP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The determination of chloride in isotope dilution experiment is done by the mixing of 5.0 mg of sodium chloride with specific activity of 3.6×104cps/mg which contains 38Cl. The half time of 38Cl is 37.3 min. The total amount of chloride present in original sample is to be determined when isolation of pure AgCl of amount 400mg was happened and the counting rate of material is 38cps above the background of 150min.

Concept introduction:

The decay constant is determined by using the formula of half time which is given as-

t1/2=0.693λ

Also, the mass of chloride ion in sample is calculated by following formula-

mx=RtRm×mmmt ……………… (1)

Where,

mx = mass of inactive sample

Rt = counting rate

Rm = counting rate of inactive analyte

mm = isolated mass

mt = mass of radioactive tracer

An isotope dilution experiment was performed to determine the chloride content in a given samples. 5 mg of sodium chloride containing 38 Cl (t ½ = 37.3 min) was added to the unknown samples. The specific activity of the added NaCl was 4.0 × 104 cps/mg. What was the total amount of chloride in the original sample if 400 mg of pure AgCl was isolated and if this material has a count rate of 35 cps above background 148 min after addition of radiotracer.   ( deeply explain all point of question and give deeply answer).
2. The sample of 35S, is a B emitter, has an activity of 0.100 μCi. In 20.0 days, the activity of the sample has declined to 0.0853 μCi. What is the half-life of 35S? Answer: t₁/2 = 87.2 days
In the present geological period rubidium contains 27 wt % 87Rb, which is a 3 emitter with a decay constant of 1.1 x 10-11 y-¹. In 30 g of the mineral pollucite from Varuträsk in northern Sweden, 450 mg Rb and 0.90 mg Sr was found on analysis. It was shown with a mass spectrometer that 80% of this Sr was 87 Sr, which had presumably been formed from Rb. Calculate the age of the mineral in years.
