Chapter 32, Problem 2MC
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Animals are divided into two categories based on their capacity to regulate body temperature by metabolic process: ectotherm and endotherm. During the break down of food at the cellular level, energy and heat are generated. In certain organisms, the heat generated helps them to regulate their body temperature, while in others the heat generated is in small quantity and hence, does not have much contribution in maintaining the body temperature of the organism.

Ectotherms cannot be considered homeotherms, since they do not use mechanisms to keep their internal body temperatures at a constant temperature. A. True B. False
How could the increasing global temperature associated with climate change impact ectotherms? a. Ectotherm diversity will decrease in cool regions. b. Ectotherms will be able to be active all day in the tropics. c. Ectotherms will have to expend more energy to cool their body temperatures. d. Ectotherms will be able to expand into new habitats.
Which of the following is a correct statement about endothermic organisms? A. Compared to ectotherms, since they cannot have their internal body temperature leave the thermoneutral zone, they are limited with regard to the types of environments they can live in. B. Endotherms do not typically use passive mechanisms for thermoregulation, such as insulation, because they utilize metabolic energy to control body temperature. C. The trait of endothermicity is a derived characteristic in mammalian animals and is not seen in other phylogenetic branches in the Metazoan Clade. D. All endotherms possess sweat glands, which allow them to conduct evaporative cooling to lower their body temperature when needed. E. None of the above
