Concept explainers
Write an example of a linear equation of the form Ax + By = C for A = 0. Then describe the graph of the equation.
Answer to Problem 61HP
Example equation is y = 4, it is parallel to the x − axis and it is called as horizontal line.
Explanation of Solution
Given:
The equation in the form Ax + By = C for A = 0
Concept Used:
A linear equation is any equation that can be written in the form.
No variable in a linear equation is raised to a power greater than 1. Linear equations are those equations that are of the first order.
Standard form of Linear Equation is
Calculation:
The equation in the form Ax + By = C for A = 0
A = 0 means the coefficient of x is zero. There is no term with x.
Example equation: y = 4
Graph the equation y = 4
Now graph the equation. y = 4 is a line parallel to the x − axis. It is called horizontal line.
For any value of x, the y value is always 4.
The points on the line are (− 6 , 4 ) , ( 0 , 4 ) and ( 6 , 4 )
Thus, example equation is y = 4, it is parallel to the x − axis and it is called as horizontal line.
