Chapter 30, Problem 1RQ

How do the MRRs for most NTM processes compare to conventional metal cutting?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

The difference in NTM processes and conventional metal cutting in aspect of MRR.

Explanation of Solution

For machining of the materials, both non-traditional machining and conventional metal cutting are brought in the application at relevant places. NTM are brought in use when there is a need for machining brittle materials, when complex contours are needed to be cut, in manufacturing integrated circuits etc.

There is a major difference between these machining processes, which lies in their material removal rate. The material removal rate in case of conventional machining is higher as compared to non-traditional machining because in non-traditional machining have lower feed rates which result in lower metal removal rate of the non-conventional machining.

For the position shown in the figure the spring is unstretched. The spring constant k, is designed such that after the system is released from rest, the speed of the mass is zero just as the 0.6 slug mass touches the floor. Find the spring constant, k and the maximum speed of block A and the location (distance above floor) where this occurs.
