Interpretation:
The ratio of carbon to the fixed mass of oxygen for two compounds needs to be determined.
Concept introduction:
The ratio of masses of carbon to that of fixed mass of oxygen can be calculated by comparing the amounts of different carbon needed for a particular mass of oxygen. If the mass of oxygen given in both compounds are different, then change the mass of oxygen in one compound is exactly the same as it is in first compound and then the mass of carbon in terms of the new mass of oxygen is found.
