Firemen use a high-pressure hose to shoot a stream of water at a burning building. The water has a speed of 25.0 m/s as it leaves the end of the hose and then exhibits projectile motion. The firemen adjust the angle of elevation α of the hose until the water takes 3.00 s to reach a building 45.0 m away. Ignore air resistance; assume that the end of the hose is at ground level, (a) Find α. (b) Find the speed and acceleration of the water at the highest point in its trajectory. (c) How high above the ground does the water strike the building, and how fast is it moving just before it hits the building?

- An aneurysm is an abnormal enlargement of a blood vessel such as the aorta. Because of an aneurysm, the normal cross-sectional area A1 of the aorta increases to a value of A2 = 1.7A1 . The speed of the blood (ρ = 1060 kg/m3) through a normal portion of the aorta is v1 = 0.39 m/s. Assuming that the aorta is horizontal (the person is lying down), determine the amount by which the pressure P2 in the enlarged region exceeds the pressure P1 in the normal region.arrow_forwardA fire truck raises its bucket so that a firefighter can spray water on the fire from above. The building sits on a large property. The truck must park far away 33.0 meters. The bucket carrying the firefighter holding the hose can be raised to a height of 9.00 meters. Water leaves the hose T 20.0 m/s. If the hose is held so that it sprays water horizontally from this height is the water able to reach the house?arrow_forwardA flat roof is very susceptible to wind damage during a thunderstorm and/or tornado. If a flat roof has an area of 520 m2 and winds of speed 43.0 m/s blow across it, determine the magnitude of the force exerted on the roof. The density of air is 1.29 kg/m3.arrow_forward
- A tree loses water to the air by the process of transpiration at the rate of 110 g/hr. This water is replaced by the upward flow of sap through vessels in the trunk. If the trunk contains 1900 vessels, each 100 μm in diameter, what is the upward speed of the sap in each vessel? The density of tree sap is 1040 kg/m3.arrow_forwardSuppose you spray your sister with water from a garden hose. The water is supplied to the hose at a rate of 0.413 × 10-³ m³/s and the diameter of the nozzle you hold is 5.53 × 10-³ m. At what speed u does the water exit the nozzle? V = m/sarrow_forwardTwo pipes of equal and constant diameter leave a water pumping station and dump water out of an open end that is open to the atmosphere (see the following figure). The water enters at a pressure of two atmospheres and a speed of (v1 = 1.0 m/s). One pipe drops a height of 10 m. What is the velocity of the water as the water leaves each pipe?arrow_forward
- A stream of water gushes from an open pipe at an angle of 15o from the horizontal. If water comes out of the pipe at a speed of 15 m/s, how far from the pipe will the water land?arrow_forwardIn medicine, it is often important to monitor the blood flow in certain areas of the body. However, the movement of blood is difficult to monitor directly. Instead, some medical devices use the Hall effect, taking advantage of the fact that the blood flowing through a vein contains a considerable number of free ions. Model the vein in a patient's arm to be of rectangular cross section, as shown in the figure, with a width w=4.00 mm and height ℎ=3.35 mm. The entire section of the vein is immersed in a constant magnetic field of ?=0.0955 T, pointing horizontally and parallel to the width. A medical device constantly monitors the resulting Hall voltage. Suppose that medical precautions mandate that the speed of the blood flow for this particular component of the body should never drop below 21.40 cm/s. At what minimum Hall voltage VH, in millivolts, should the medical device be designed to trigger an alarm to the medical staff? ?H= mVarrow_forwardIf a person blows air at a speed of 15m / s, passing through the top of one of the branches of a U-tube containing water, what will be the difference in level between the two sides of this tube?arrow_forward
- In a water pistol, a piston drives water through a larger tube of area A1 into a smaller tube of area A2 as shown in the figure below. The radius of the large tube is 1.40 cm and that of the small tube is 1.10 mm. The smaller tube is 3.00 cm above the larger tube. A2 F A1 (a) If the pistol is fired horizontally at a height of 1.60 m, determine the time interval required for water to travel from the nozzle to the ground. Neglect air resistance and assume atmospheric pressure is 1.00 atm. (b) If the desired range of the stream is 7.50 m, with what speed v2 must the stream leave the nozzle? m/s (c) At what speed vị must the plunger be moved to achieve the desired range? m/s (d) What is the pressure at the nozzle? Pa (e) Find the pressure needed in the larger tube. Pa (f) Calculate the force that must be exerted on the trigger to achieve the desired range. (The force that must be exerted is due to pressure over and above atmospheric pressure.)arrow_forwardWater is ejected from the water nozzle with a speed vo = 47.9 ft/sec. For what value of the angle e will the water land closest to the wall after clearing the top? Neglect the effects of wall thickness and air resistance. What distance x to the right of point B does the water land? 4.5' 72.0' B 64' Not to scale Answer: i X = i ftarrow_forwardIn medicine, it is often important to monitor the blood flow in certain areas of the body. В h Model the vein in a patient's arm to be of rectangular cross section, as shown in the figure, with a width w = 4.00 mm and height h = 3.65 mm. A medical device constantly monitors the resulting Hall voltage. Suppose that medical precautions mandate that the speed of the blood flow for this particular component of the body should never drop below 15.80 cm/s. At what minimum Hall voltage VH, in millivolts, should the medical device be designed to trigger an alarm to the medical staff? VH = mVarrow_forward
